Has anyone got a Garmin edge 25 that they use for navigation duties?

I'm looking for something that will give me a simple 'turn left / right here' when I'm road riding in unfamiliar areas. So I could plan a route with ridegps and then download it to the Garmin and just follow it - taking the stress out of the myriad of small french roads in the summer. I'm not bothered about live segment info or linking to power data.

Or is it better to get a 510/520/810 for their better mapping.

cheers all

25 is just a breadcrumb trail to follow - no maps, no instructions

I have an edge 25 and I think you are meant to load the route as a "course" which you can then access and follow on the device. I've tried a couple of times but I just cannot get the course to sync with my edge 25. Love to know how to overcome this though as have followed the instructions to the letter!

Legend

Happy to be proven wrong given I haven't got it working but I thought the edge 25 gave turn instructions along the breadcrumb trail?

Here you go, was watching a video last night which shows the edge 25 navigation. No map but it does give notice of turns. Still pretty basic though, but for £88 at Halfords (minus 10% BC discount) it's hard to ignore. Just wish there were some better discounts on the wahoo bolt around.

I have an edge 25 and use it for following courses. I plan them on the pc and then just sync it from the app on my phone. When you set of choose a course and it gives you directions when turns are coming up so it will give a left arrow in 400 feet etc. Unfortunately it is in feet if you want the other info to be in miles ( speed etc). I find it is perfect for planning a new route from home and would t really need anything else.

I stand corrected! Got an 810 for navigation use, think I just assumed the 25 was the basics

Any idea if you get the turn notification if you've got it set on one of the other screens (speed /hr) rather than the breadcrumb screen?

See the video I posted above, it would appear you do.

Yes the directions pop up. They take up about half screen so pretty small but you also get a beep to let you know it is there. You also get a beep when you go off the course so if you miss a turn you get notifications.

I use mine for navigation, have been using along with a Veloviewer heatmap to try and ride all the wee minor roads in my area, have discovered some gems that I would never have followed otherwise.

Turn signals appear regardless of what screen you're on. Distances to junctions appear in metric on mine so I assume it is just a setting you have to fiddle with.

Syncing courses involves Garmin Connect (online) but also Garmin Express which you have to download first and can be a bit fussy, took me three or four goes to get it working, but there's lots of advice online. You create the route on Garmin Connect then send to device using Garmin Express.

I actually find the route creating on Garmin Connect to be an absolute chore, and it seems to have an infuriating feature whereby if you move one waypoint, it will alter your route elsewhere! I don't trust it anymore so create my route on Strava (basically google maps but easier use for routes of more than ten waypoints...) then export as GPX. You can then import this to Garmin Connect and send to your device.

You can also create your own segments on Garmin Connect, but I've yet to get them to work with the 'virtual racer' feature, which is otherwise quite cool, lets you know your time gap between your current time, and your personal best. I've used it over the length of a whole route, but would prefer to use for segments.
