I'm trying to get to know Garmin Connect's course building facilities, but I'm having real issues searching for points of interest to add to a course.
With every other web based mapping software I've used, when I search for a POI the map's centred on it and zoomed in to a level where I can see it.
With Garmin Connect I'm shown a map which (on my monitor) is at a zoom level of roughly 1 mile to an inch, giving me an area which, I'd guess, is roughly 60 square miles within which my POI resides. If I zoom in the map's not even centred on the POI, leaving me to hunt around for what I'm looking for.
Initial searches seem to centre the map very roughly in the general area of the sought for POI but if subsequent POI searches return results within the area of the displayed map (pretty usual for a cycle route) the map doesn't move leaving you to hunt it down yourself.
Am I doing something wrong here? Failing that I guess that there are plenty of other mapping options out there.
I've never built a route using POIs. Other than that the Course creator seems to work just fine, though I mostly use Komoot these days, with the routes being automatically synced to Garmin Connect.
I'm curious as to why anyone would want to build a route based on joining a series of POI together...
Anyway, not sure whether it helps the OP, but Strava just released an update (for subscribers only, and web browser only) which shows photos on their route builder so you can click thru photos and create a route based on that. Good video by DC Rainmaker on YouTube showing the process...

Maybe the OPee has specific requirements?

Hence my comment...
Perhaps 'point of interest "has a more specific meaning than I'm aware of. I just mean something searchable on the map, an address, landmark etc. I might want to select a few to visit and let Connect do the routing.
The point is, if I search for something, my own postcode for example, the result is shown on a map zoomed out to show roughly 60 square miles & several towns & cities. If I'm looking for somewhere I'm not sure of the location of, it's a real headache to find. Surely it would be more useful to centre the map on the sought for item and zoom right in so you can see it?

Hmmm. I suggest you watch the DC Rainmaker YT video I mentioned above as he made similar comment when comparing Strava and Komoot route planning though this was specifically about embedded photos rather than "POI".
It may help though obviously it's not planning using Connect. Frankly, I find Connect useless for routing and I now generally use Komoot in conjunction with checking Strava heatmaps and/or looking up other rides via Strava segments for anything questionable.
When exploring, I'll also use Google Maps street view for road rides if it isn't clear whether the road is gravel or tarmac (or might go thru private/restricted property)
