I have been using the Garmin Soft chest strap with my Edge 800 and the heart rate strap may be about 2 years old now and it seems to be playing up a lot now. Is the later strap ok or is there another make worth trying out.

Later strap seems fine - I had the same. Check the version number on the sensor as well as it's slightly different.

Stuck a polar soft strap on mine.

Just to be clear, this means using a Polar soft strap (which are about £18) with your existing Garmin transmitter. The Polar transmitter isn't compatible as it doesn't use ANT+

Stupid egg-sucky question... you have changed the battery, yes?

I found this miraculously improved the performance of mine 🙂

timely question. I'm getting fed up with my garmin transmitter cutting out when I get close to max HRM. Was thinking of posting asking for suggestions of alternatives 🙂

Does anyone do transmitters that are Bluetooth/Ant+ or it that just asking too much of the battery

edit: clicks though on the Cardiosport link above and guess what, bluetooth and ant+. Question answered before asked - stw rocks
edit2: ah, you have to change something to switch. still pretty good though

I have changed the battery twice and even fitted the battery the wrong way round which it said to do online to reset the unit before you re fit a new battery. I even use some ultrasound gel which sorted it for a while but it now keep dropping out and giving very low readings.

That's exactly what happens with mine so i'm happy to know it's a real issue rather than something funny about the way i use it

I had the same thing - spikes and massive low dips with my Garmin HRM band. Switch to Polar and it's been consistent ever since.

There's a guide to the conversion here: http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Garmin_Heart_Rate_Monitoring
