Garmin Edge 1000 can't find satellites. Is is borked? Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to resolve it? Has anyone had one repaired by Garmin?
Have you tried the obligatory hard reset?
I seem to remember having this years ago with my Edge500 and ended up doing a hard reset before just leaving it in the middle of the garden for half an hour or so. When I went to check on it, it had auto-powered off, but upon turning it back on again it found the satellites without much bother.
If a hard reset doesn't work, you'll probably need to contact Garmin.
Surely the first stage with this problem is to look up at the sky, quizzically?
(I know I always do this, then think to myself - what am I expecting to see???)
I always try lifting it up in the air so the satellites are closer. Doesn't work.
Make sure the date and time are correct
They don’t actually scan the skies looking for satellites, they have an onboard almanac telling them where to look when, so if the date and time are wrong it’ll be looking in the wrong place
Can't be bothered
software update? or if there are too many rides stored on mine, it sometimes struggles to find satellites. Don't know why that happens but always seems to clear it.
Oddly my 1000 was doing the same this morning on the commute in. Seem to sort itself out eventually.
Actullay there is a big thread on the garmin website about it, solution is to use GPS only not gps and glonass.

Err, partly right. GPS units don't "look" in any direction for the satellites. GPS is a time based system, once a receiver has received a signal from even a single satellite it knows the time.
The almanac is transmitted in parts by each satellite and is valid for a couple of weeks so if you've left your GPS off for a month it will take a while to refresh the almanac. The almanac allows the receiver to work out which satellites will be in view and whether any are not transmitting because they are undergoing some maintenance. It takes over ten minutes for all the parts of the almanac to be downloaded from fresh, just stick the unit out in the garden and let it do its thing.
The satellites are in low earth orbit so constantly change location in the sky, this means that at certain times you'll only have a few above the horizon. If your location means that you are obscuring part of the sky then you could be blocking the signal from several satellites.
Tried a reset, tried leaving outside - well, leaving it on and cycling slowly with it. Tried GPS rather than GPS/GLONASS.
FYI - GPS satellites aren't in LEO, they're 18000km higher than that, but you're right, there are relatively few of them, so open spaces is much better.
If you last used it in a very different location then it may need to be left stationary for a while so that it can work out where it is - if I recall correctly by default many GPS devices remember where they were last used so that they know which satellites in the network to interrogate first (which helps to give a quick initial fix) - give them a very different bit of sky to look at and they'll draw a blank when they search for the last-used satellites from the previous location.
Having this problem with a couple of my garmin devices. If they have been reset or put on charge (or most importantly not connected to the piece of terrible poo that is connect app) then they fail to find GPS (even if date and time are correct). My work around is just to connect to app prior to using and then always seems to work fine.
May be a phone / software bug as my devices should automatically connect when in range (Sammy note 9).
Not ideal but works for me.
I'll give that a try DC.
It's usually a sign that the unit is on its way out.
Factory reset and leave it outside for an hour. If it still hasn't found anything, Garmin customer service who'll charge you about £80 for a "refurbished" model if it's still within warranty or do **** all if it isn't in warranty.

Ahh, I think I know the issue.
It's from the future. Needs to go back I'm afraid. 😉😁
Mines being playing up for the last few days as has a friends.
Operation Joint Warrior is on. Perhaps they're mucking about with the GPS signals (it's happened before).
There was some GPS jamming around Loch Ewe and the Minch last week. Though don't think it would reach too far from there.
Garmin have just issued a new software upgrade for my Oregon that includes "A fix for GPS+GLONASS". Might be worth checking there isn't something similar for your Edge, Could be that either GPS or GLONASS have made some sort of change.
My Edge 1000 has been a right pain this week. Failed to record properly on Tuesday & Wednesday. Didn't ride Monday and yesterday/today seem OK.
I've rarely have problems (of this kind at any rate!) before. Had it about 5 years and done ~ 12,000 miles.
As Scotrouts and I’ve already said if you have your GPS settings are set to gps + glonas you will see the problem, change to gps only it’s fine. One thing I didn’t realise is that is set in each profile so when I changed to a different profile it reoccurred.
It seems to be an issue with the most recent set of firmware so has only recently happened.
