About to order some of these to go with a Garmin 500. I want to get 2 sets, one for summer road bike, one for gravel. Does the head unit recognise which bike it is on easily enough without faffing on setup ?

Currently have Giant Ridesense on road bike and nowt on CDF but am giving up on Ridesense as want away from magnets (the cadence one picks up debris and has scratched the chainstay)

If I remember the edge 500 set up correctly - and it's been a while - then this isn't a problem. You have to set up each bike separately, and the cadence and speed sensors are tied to the individual bike profile. Heart rate is not tied to bike profile. You have to change from one bike to the other manually. Unfortunately, I seem to recall this is buried quite a long way into the menu structure tire for something you're likely to do often.

Thanks, I don't change around often and have seen the 'bike 1' etc menu, so sounds promising, cheers

I use the new Garmin separate speed and cadence sensors. Non magnet so no alignment faffing and easily moved from bike to bike. Don't know about the 500 but on the Edge 800 you set up each bike with a profile that tells it what sensors you have and wheel size (if you want to measure distance on a turbo trainer). Just select which bike you are riding and away you go.

Muke, thanks for that, I am going for same sensors but fancy 2 sets for ease of swooping so will set up 2 bike profiles. I'm assuming the wheel size setting can just be left at auto if not using on a turbo ?

They definitely can be set up to individual bike profiles. I have a garmin 510. XC bike has the newer style garmin speed and cadence sensors while the road bike has a Bontrager duotrap. No issues with pairing and the unit picks them up automatically provided I choose the bike profile associated with it.

On the 510 it's on the home screen at the top of the page and you set it up under settings.

500 can store three bike profiles. ANT codes for sensors are separate, and I think it may recognise the bike by the sensor code. It's been a while as mines on loan.

Or use the new cadence sensor that you can move between bikes very easily.

My 500 refuses to recognise the newer cadence sensor when I move it between bikes.
