Hi -

I'm trying to get my head around gpx files, garmin connect, strava, and a garmin 800. Can anyone explain their process for doing things in order to:

1. track my rides, save on garmin connect and strava
2. store gpx files from other people and add them to my garmin
3. use the training functionality on the garmin

At the moment it's a bit of a jumble!
Is there any benefit to using garmin connect and strava? I don't use a smartphone...

Thanks chaps

You can create and share routes on strava but it isn't great for off road. For off road (and backup) I just save gpx files on my computer. I create them using bikehike.

I simply upload my files direct from my GPS to strava using the communicator plugin. Don't use Connect.

I add files to my garmin by copying them into the "new files" folder.

Not that interested in the training function on the garmin. I train on the turbo and have some postit notes on the garage wall with training routines. The only thing I do have is an hourly chime as I occasionally forget to eat and drink on endurance rides.

I believe you get more data from connect (for free) but the amount of info I need is "I rode hard for 50 miles" or "I went faster along that bit today". I'm not a big lover of heart rate zones, power rate meters etc. never seen much call for them.

*Bah too slow* Does it have to be Garmin connect? I use Garmin training centre (free download) to connect to my units and store / retrieve my rides. From there I can export the gpx or tcx files to use on various mapping software / Strava or transfer between units. If your Garmin is connected to the laptop or PC install Garmin communicator plugin (again free) and you can upload directly to the Strava website. Using other peoples gpx files can be done simply by using windows explorer and copying to the units "new files" folder, it will then appear as a selectable course. HTH

The 800 can be a bit tricky to get to grips with because the menu logic is all over the place. Here's a few guides I found useful

thanks all v helpful

1. what is the difference between garmin connect and garmin adventures?

2. can i bypass garmin basecamp and garmin express and just use the unit plus strava or something else e.g. mapmyride - garmin's software is horrible!

And in Basecamp what is the difference between a route, a track and an adventure? 😕

I've not really found a site that lets you upload gpx files for others to view (other than rides completed).

With bikehike you plot the route, save it as a gpx file on your computer then drag it to the garmin. I hated basecamp and connect.
