Have followed Edge 800 manual to the letter menu>bike settings>bike profiles>ant+speed/cadence>bike sensors>yes>off button....

Device speed icon flashes but nothing else happens. Have tried with sensor on hub and wheel spinning as well as with 800 next to read wheel. Am on verge of throwing out of window... Any hints or tips appreciated

Put a new battery in the sensor.

Non magnet you say? My Garmin sensor needs a magnet on the wheel and when you have set it up like you said the unit automatically calibrates itself. How would a speed sensor work without a magnet?

Accelerometers. Mine paired with my 1000 straight off. Well, maybe 15 seconds of spinning the wheel while it searched.

Not sure about that model, but with some Garmins you have to specify it is a speed-only sensor or cadence-only sensor. If you have selected the option for a combined speed/cadence sensor, it won't detect it.

Yes I was on my phone and couldn't be bothered ´to look up the new Garmin speed sensors. Now I have seen them and see how they work. Here's a little vid I found about set up if that helps.
