Recently started riding properly with my 4 year old (previously I’d take a child seat for when he got tired).  He’s moving slowly from his balance bike which he still prefers to his Early Rider pedal bike, so distances are in the region of about 3-5 miles.

I’ve noticed as we’re building stamina that games are good to distract him and chunk the ride so to speak. The current favourite is treasure hunting for chocolate coins which is working great. But it’s got me thinking of other ways to entertain him as we go a bit further and further…. What else could we do? Anything that’s worked with your kids (or even easily bored mates!)

Geocaching?

Effectively treasure hunting but using tech (mobile phone) to home in on the target.

One of my friends (around the age of, I dunno, 13ish) once managed to spit in the air while riding along and catch it in his mouth again. Much applause and cheers from the group.

I suspect this isn't the sort of game you had in mind though.

How about playing yellow car? Obviously you can't hit someone while you're riding, but my kids love playing it

Dog turd roulette?
Deliberately ride over a turd then see if you can miss it as flicks up past your face.
Edit: i came here to suggest geocaching, but someone beat me to it 😂😂😂

Thanks for the suggestions. Might give Ossify and MartyMac’s contributions a miss though 😂

What about nature/wildlife spotting?

Points if you spot a blackbird, robin, dandelion, foxglove, rabid badger, peacock etc. Easily recognisable stuff to begin with, as he grows you can move up to specific varieties of rare trees and so on 😉
