I just got an email offering me 20% off annual subscription...

Backstory: Strava pushed their subscription cost up a couple of months ago (Cost to me would have doubled so I cancelled my subscription) Supposedly, there was a lot of push back from a lot of users so maybe they've reconsidered...

Got the email today, haven't looked into it properly but I assumed it was following the subs increase.

I'm nearing the end of a free months subscription they automatically enrolled me for. I expect some sort of discounted option to continue with it - which I'll be ignoring.

Hoping for this email. Recently cancelled Strava subscription but missing the route planning and 'progress tracking'.  20% discount would see me resubscribing...

Hmmm, interesting although I don't have the email! Let it lapse a month or so ago and haven't missed it, but this evening I've been planning a route in France and was thinking the Strava heatmap would be quite handy as it's got better coverage (more users) than RideWithGPS's version! I'd only go in for a month though I think.

If you view an activity on the Strava app then you can see the heatmap. You'd still need to use a different planning tool though.

Discount only applies to annual membership. I tried monthly but no discount available 😞

See, I deleted that email without reading it, and I bet a lot of people do the same. I reckon Strava were too punchy with that price rise and they might find it hard to get the subscribers back. Since not having it I miss the segment tables and some of the fitness / performance stats, but not enough to even pay £43 for it with 20% off. Wonder if other people feel the same……

FYI - You get free offline OS maps now as well (plus ign + a bunch of others) included via Fatmap.

I didn’t get an email but it popped up on the app offering 20% off a sub.
I had a think about it and decided I’d take out a sub for a year, opened the app up again and it’s back to full price!

They clearly don’t want my £43

@scotroutes

Thanks 🙂

I reckon Strava were too punchy with that price rise

I think they should have planned the announcement much better. Loads of speculation everywhere over how much the price rises would be and when you could see the renewal in your account, and then all that stuff about different prices and increases in different countries and monthly vs annual rises.  It just gave everyone loads to talk about and stirred everyone up. And presumably a lot of people (like me) had an older price that Strava had honoured through their experiment with the 3 different membership plans, and then again when I switched from monthly to annual. I hadn't cancelled as I knew if I left and came back, I'd pay full price. So when my renewal put me back on the 'new customer' price, I let it lapse.

I've let it go too, but I see if I click into the account details it says join now and save 49%

Unfortunately for them I've seen there's nothing I miss so won't be going back.

Yep, I was a monthly subscriber for a long time (not sure why I never switched to annual ... presumably because the price differential wasn't big enough back in the day....).

Anyway, with a decent differential between annual and monthly PLUS this 20% off deal, I'm now paying less overall than my previous subscription. I deliberately used a credit card which expires in a couple of months so it doesn't automatically renew at the full annual rate....

Still fine with the free effort as all the interesting stuff I get with Garmin which suits everything I need. I don't use the heat maps or bother about how slow I am...quite happy being a hermit in this online game.
The app did pop up a 20% discount for me today but as I was paying £23 until that stopped 2 years ago and was then offered £46 for the same thing I figure a 20% discount still doesn't make it tempting.
Suspect a few people will take it though, it does offer a load of useful stuff now.

So much for me being a VIP to get 20%, you've almost all got the same email too! 😆

£43.99 for the first year and then back to the increased price of £54.99 isn't going to tempt me back.

Sure, I slightly miss the fitness stats, segment leaderboards etc. But I've barely ridden outdoors this year, especially in the last two months, when I'd normally be riding ~10 hours a week.

Anyone know how to enable Fatmaps in Strava? I don't see it...

Download the Fatmaps app. Log in to it with your Strava log in. I've just come back from the alps and having fully usable IGN mapping was unbelievably useful. A very nice surprise.

I love maps.

I've been a paid strava user for quite a few years, it was always about £35 a year from memory, was rather surprised to see a payment notification of being charged £55 iirc a couple of days ago 😮

Have you cancelled or are you using enough of the system often enough to think that is still a good price?

I do use a lot of the features, so would miss the premium aspect, just a bit of a shock to see the new price.  I probably would have continued regardless, but the price increase wasn't exactly fully transparent 😐

No email here, to be honest I wouldn't be tempted anyway - Strava is just a social app for me, all the useful stuff is better in TrainingPeaks, Garmin etc.

Been a subscriber since 2012 and have always been billed in USD for some reason. Just cancelled after seeing my renewal will be at $79.00 pa which is currently £62.00.

Weirdly, I pay in GBP yet got an email saying the price will go up to $99 AUD… £52 or thereabouts. Maybe I should cancel and renew when they offer me a discount

My app says 49% off but the price is the standard price. Looks like it's just saying the annual sub is 49% cheaper than monthly.

That said, I'm intrigued by the IGN maps due to currently planning a route in France, so time for a bit of research on French rights of way and I might just pay for a month to play on Fatmaps.

That's what I did - I think my previous monthly subscription expired in April

I let mine go a few weeks back. I don't mind paying, but don't see it's worth over £50 for the little I get out of it.

I honestly haven't missed it. My planning is all on Kamoot, which I think is great and I paid £20 for lifetime planning. I still get to see what my mates are up to and they can with me.

I would have been happy to pay £24/yr for segment leaderboards, but the time off has only demonstrated just how little all that means to me anymore.

Think they screwed the pooch by being greedy!

Strava shows me a current "offer" of £4.58 per month (when billed annually) with the indication that the normal price is £8.99 pm. Are some folk actually paying £108 per year for it?

I think it's actually the opposite... they were far, far too generous for too long with what they gave away for free for what was (at the time) a pretty game-changing platform. Seem to recall the CEO basically admitted this a while back, and basically said "look guys, we messed up, we really have to start making some money now!" 😂

But it offers nothing Garmin Connect can't do.

I was happy to support Strava when it was worth the charge, but its current pricing strategy doesn't offer VFM, IMHO.

It started being flaky with me earlier this year in that it started to stop and pause during a ride. Most recent case was it stopped with 2km of the megavalanche to go, had a moment where I thought I'd got down in less than an hour and was elated, then the crushing realisation that Strava had messed up again hit... it was accurate all week until Sunday.

I let it lapse in May, until it records rides properly again, I'm out. Looking at a Garmin watch as an alternative, more expensive but I think might better suit my needs.

20% off isn't going to tempt me back...

It has a much mor social aspect to it than Garmin - suspect that is the biggest appeal for people - happy to see their stats but really want to see how they stacked up against others.
Garmin does everything Strava offers for free (providing you have bought a Garmin unit, unless you can use Garmin connect without), but no social interactions (that I can find).

Connect also has Likes, Comments, Photo Uploads and Segments but yeah, it's really for folk with Garmin hardware.

I think Zilog and mikertroid are both right. If they had started at a reasonable price many years ago and gradually raised their prices over the intervening period, they wouldn't have generated so much push back.

Now, they are in a position where they need to ramp up receipts otherwise they could go out of business...the real problem, though, was the subterfuge, lack of transparency and lack of consistency in how they handled the (significant) price increase.

Anyone else recently had an offer with a discount after letting their subscription lapse?  Or found a discount code that works, over the ‘standard’ £54 annual rate?

Those of us who've been on a Free account for a long while still keep getting offered the free 2 month trial, which I'm sort of tempted by to take me through to the end of summer, but I know I'll forget to cancel and end up with a year at full whack.

Happy enough with a free account and a £10 p/a veloviewer sub still, not bothered about leader boards, I just need to track my lack of fitness and see mates rides.

Yeah, I've been in VeloViewer for a few years too, though might can that next renewal. I really wish they look at using Connect as a source rather than Strava, then I'd ditch the latter completely.
