I'm staying near Newton Stewart for a week and am looking for mountain biking. My favourite type of riding Is jumpy, Bermy and flowy but I enjoy technical too. I've heard glentress is great but don't know whether I should go because it is the furthest from where I am staying. How are kirroughtree, mabbie, dalbeattie, ae etc and how hard is innerleithen?
Thanks
Ok get a map privacy Google maps. Put in where you are staying put in inners and gt. Decide if it's worth the near 3hr travel time each way. Try it with kirroughtree see how long that'll take.
Glentrool blue is flowy with a nice long final bermy descent and as you’re staying local and the weather is good I’d advise you to take a ride up the Merrick (biggest hill in Galloway) nr glentrool, kirroughtree blue/red/Black all good and ask sam at bike shop about the off piste trails -all good, then Dalbeattie red, look on strava/Trailforks for the off piste stuff, same at Mabie. For jumpy stuff then Ae will will make you happy, loads of very technical off piste enduro stuff thanks to “Cubby & co” from Ae bike shop, I’d advise to do these trails last after you’ve honed your skills for a few days before hand as there’s a greater chance of injuring yourself 😉
Soma pretty much nails it.
Kirroughtree is at your doorstep. Besides Mabie Dalbeattie and Ae, Drumlanrig is well worth a visit.
And Dalbeattie.
Glentress isn't necessarily better than those and the distance rules it out unless you want to spend a day in the car.
Couldn't you actually cycle from there to McMoab? In about twenty minutes?
If you have a whole week and bermy, jumpy and flowy is your favourite style of riding I'd definitely drive over to Glentress for a days riding, camp or stay in a B&B nearby and ride there or innerleithen the next day too.
Ae does have a fair few jumps but lots of them the condition, spacing and flow really isn't great at all.
You could easily do all the main dumfries stanes routes, GT and inners in a week
As above, plenty of info on Trailforks and Strava
Galloway Hillbillies are on Facebook, may be able to hook up with them
There is a Wed night group who ride out of Castle Douglas. Drop in to the Livingstons furniture shop or Studio Velo for Dalbeattie info
Tues night ride at Ae, ride out at 7 and back for a meal at the cafe for 8.30ish. Have a look at the shop Facebook page . New section on Granny Greelove has the air bandits smiling ☺
Usually a few riders at Mabie on a Thursday night
Dalbeattie. Not a lot of elevation therefore not much in the way of fast, flowing trail or berms. Some people find it hard work for that reason
Mabie is short but sweet and does have a fair bit of winch and plummet. Some sections were upgraded last year but with all the harvesting and weather other sections have become badly eroded .
Kirry and Ae has everything depending on the individuals experience and expectations
