Well I finally bit the bullet and have given full suss another go. Tried it about four years ago, but think I chose the wrong bike for me (Trek Fuel ex9 29er) and it put me off trying again.
Fast forward to now and my Morf left me feeling battered on the rough stuff. Grudgingly admitted to myself that I’m getting older, sold the Morf and picked up a bike I thought I’d never be able to afford. A lovely used Cotic Flare.
Took it out for its first ride today and it felt much better than the Fuel. Feels very different from the hardtails I’ve had and will take some getting used to. Think I had too much sag in the rear shock and need to change my riding style. All in I’m impressed and might be converted.
Do folk tend to run about 25% sag front and rear? Any tips to get the most out of riding a squishy bike?
Get the setup right and you should barely notice your suspension working hard for you.
Get it wrong and even the most expensive bike will ride like a bag of shit.
Saying that, I’m not that fussy about suspension setup, so I aim for about 30% sag ish, which as a rule of thumb for me is PSI set to my weight in kg for the front, psi set to my weight in lbs for the rear.
Couple of clicks more rebound on the back that on the front, go ride.
If it's the O2 RCX shock then I run about 30% sag with the rebound clicked all the way to the slow side..
Air pressure was trial and error, but I seem to have settled for about 145-150psi for me, 75kg kitted.
The trick is to take the time to tinker a bit, front and rear, until you find the settings which supports your riding style.
Thanks for the input. It’s the X fusion shock and RL2 fork. I’ll have a play around with air pressures. Back end felt a little loose today. Could definitely notice it working. Had the rebound about five clicks in. I’m impressed with the bike. Just need to get used to how it rides differently
Borrow/buy a shockwiz
Thanks Tom. Didn’t even know that existed! Might have to look in to renting one.
