How convinced are you about the ex-atherton thing? Just about every used GT on Pinkbike is ex-atherton. This XL Halfords Aggressor is Rachel Atherton's old bike! IIRC there's been a couple of carbon Forces and the geometry's pretty questionable on some, proper GT tall and steep weirdness.

I think I've see that Alpine, and of the three it's the one I'd have, but I am not you. The GT would be of interest though

Have a five with rp2 and 32's. I do all mountain on it ie everything. The odd dh run, xc spins and mainly natural single track. It is a great bike. Only thing that let's it down is the shock on long descents. If I did more dh stuff I would go for the alpine, but for everything else I find it the perfect all rounder. Just fitted a single offset bush and it corners even better and it's a bit more stable on the flat out dh runs

Pretty convicted by the Atherton thing, but I know what you mean! He's selling lots of other ex team frames, and has pictures of his with the athertons and riding with them. As it turns out the Five is a 2013 with hope headset and bb ! Is that what I should go for? I like the alpine, I ride a lot of trails, my locals are steep, loamy and berms and jump galore, but I spend most of my time doing singletrack and xc riding! The gt is gorgeous, but I know what you mean about the steep angles, not sure if I'm a fan or not?!

Oh and Chojin, not after an asr5 unless it's carbon or you have a spare sb66 knocking around 🙂

You appear to be finding the best deals on the internet right now! I've only seen a (very similar sounding) Alpine for £750, and Fives for over £800

Sounds more like the Five would be up your street. It has no issues whatsoever on the steep and fast, but can handle as much XC type work as you need. I wouldn't fancy the Alpine for flatter, undulating type rides

If it's the latest Force, it's got fairly sensible geometry to my eyes, though I've not ridden it so pinches of salt.

Oh well, if you decide not to go for that one, do you happen to have a link? Not exactly in the market but, well, curious

Alpine. Sell the shock and buy a used fox RP23. Awesome light long travel frame cheap.

This is what I did on a 08 with a 216x63 RP23.

To be fair - it does sound like the 5 suits your riding best. I am a 5 rider. I want an Alpine (almost) entirely due to Peaks descents that I really want to do quicker (I'm ready to suffer it everywhere else for that extra speed going down).

Light and Alpine aren't two words you generally hear together

Two five riders were surprised by mine. Its the build and suspension that you use

Yup, lightest I think I've heard of was 31lbs with air shock, air fork, XTR drive-train and no dropper

e.g. http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/orange-alpine-160-what-does-yours-weigh

No hora - ready to 'suffer' the Alpine going up! I'm already 100kg though - so I suffer everywhere (apart from going down)

My Alpine is sub 31 lbs at 30.6 lbs but it's a pretty expensive build -bos devilles, rp23 (soon to be replaced with heavier ccdb air cs), crossmax enduro wheelset, conti barons (tubeless), carbon easton havocs, thomson stem, xtr brakes, xo cranks with works direct mount ring, carbon mrp amg top guide, vaults, 1x10 set up (xt cassette, saint shifter, zee mech), x fusion hilo (stuck with 27.2 options), selle italia flite and probs some other bits i've missed lol! It's an awesome bike for descending on and climbs well enough but would be pretty boring on tamer xc trails i think - i have a hardtail for that.
