I've just had another 105 STI fail me on the CX. Replaced the first (LH) with ultegra and now it's the right hand side that's given up. I have 10 speed 105, XT hubs on h plus son archetype and BB7 road brakes. Gears are getting worn and are due a swap anyway. The bike (pro 6) is due some TLC - hubs, front mech is on the way out etc.

Would love full hydraulic set up, not hope or TRP. What's the best/cheapest option at the moment? Do we know if the RS685 are reliable yet? I'm guessing id need a new 11speed compatible hub? It all seems a bit spendy....

What are you guys running on cx/road/winter bikes running? Any suggestions or recommendations?

Cheers in advance people.

i think full hydro with shifters , it is only going to be Shimano or Sram .

i was in same position , and could not spend the extra £ on 11 speed .

so went with Juin Tech r1 calipers . same principle as TRP Hydr .

so far really happy with them . much better than bb7 .

yeah as you're 10 speed you pretty much need the full group to upgrade the brakes

I've never shopped with them but starbike.com has a 105 hydraulic groupset for £511

Had CX1 hydro disc for nearly a year now. Done thousands of miles with no issues. Just replaced the pads which were eye-watering at £20 an end but heh ho.

Had the rs685 since September last year 9from bike24) They have been faultless. Lever feel is really nice and the power/modulation is amazing

Done a winter and summer of cross racing plus commuting and still on same pads

I have shimano rs685 on my tcx SLR 1 and used them now for over 6 months with no issues. They are so much better than the spyres. No regrets at all. Have ridden the HONK, and other adventure cross with then and they have been faultless.

This tells you how best to remove a cog from an 11 speed cassette to use on 10 speed hub:
http://darkspeedworks.com/blog.htm

so you need
- STI's + calipers
- 11 speed cassette
- rear mech

(I think)

Using 685s on my cross bike, love them and wouldn't go back to cable discs.

Thanks All.

Guess it's time to bite the bullet. That 105 group looks good. Off to check the specs on the STIs v 685s.

HH. Ta for the link. That looks like an option. Plus chain I guess, and front rings?

A year into CX1 hydro and shifters for me. No problems, awesome brakes and shifters.

My Norton AV went berserk when I tried to look at the darkspeedworks! On 2 computers.
Just what does it say? I would guess it means removing a smallish sprocket as the bigger, less needed ones are often in a block. 🙁

Yes Matt. It's an option for me.

I'm only using cheapo XT centre lock hubs, so could pick up the equivalent hub fairy cheap and go the whole hog

685's are cheaper from the Fatherland. Around £300 IIRC. So buy a 105 groupset, sell the STI's and calipers and you're away for about £450 - £500. Your timing could be better, Merlin were doing 10% off Shimano until yesterday. That plus Quidco made 105 about £260. Have a Google, you should be able to get it cheaper from Rose/Bike24/BikeDiscount etc.
