Leeds Bradford area

Got a quick weekend away to southern spain next weekend - managed to get some biking sorted but I don't have a full-face helmet. Could buy one but only get paid on Friday (same day we fly out).

What's the general view on second hand helmets / helmet hire?

I understand the other lads are bringin theirs - do I buy one before I go (will have to be via lbs as wont be able to get one posted in time). Do I find one locally here second hand? Do I buy one out there and risk there not being one available or do I take my xen (or snowboard helmet as that seems stronger)

Or does someone local to Leeds have one for sale that's in good nick / not crashed and can sell it to me on Friday morning?

And does this go in the wanted forum?!

and you'd wear s/h safety gear...

If you are in Leeds go to Stif (or other LBS) and buy one - ring beforehand to see who's got what in.

Or buy one in each size from CRC and get them sent to a mate?

I'd buy s/h safety gear if I could see it first - yes and even more so if I knew the person selling it.

Have you driven a second hand car? What's the difference in a s/h helmet and brakes on a s/h car?

Or ask the tour operator if you can borrow a spare one. If it's switchbacks or similar, I'm sure they have a few old ones knocking around.

Hehe - it's a stag do and we've managed to get 12 of us across two operators but we're having to hire bikes out there

There's been a few difficulties cos both operators want all the business but neither can hire all the bikes so we're having to get them to work together. Two groups - one XC for the lower abilities and one semi-dh for the better half.

I'd reckon one of em could loan a full face but its a bit delicate at the minute 🙂

Ill end up bringing my normal helmet probably - was just gauging opinion first. Cheers

Second hand is better than none I reckon. Cue pitch 😉 I've got a 661 Strike medium which I can promise has never taken a hard impact (it's almost annoying that I've never hit my head hard in a full face!) It has a couple of paint marks from I don't know what- most likely being on the bars while pushing up. I replaced it with a prettier, lighter model but it's decent enough and in very good nick... Could do it for £25 posted, if you want.

Though, obviously no guarantee it'll fit!

Because you can try the brakes, plus take the wheel off and check them.

A helmet has two ways of saving your head; the hard outer and soft inner. Just because the outer is not damaged does not mean that the inner hasn't been. Doh!

Cheers Northwind - I've a massive potato head so a medium is a bit small

And thanks for the description of how a helmet works b r. My point wasn't about 'how you can check it'. It's about do you check it. S/h car probably wasn't the best example. As Northwind says, something s/h is better than nothing

you can try my old helmet if you want , I've come off in it but no major impacts ,most of the damage to the paint has been from me putting it down on slopes where it's rolled 5-10 feet down.the peak has broke and is being held together with gaffer tape.

I live in LS16 near the airport and also have a big head.no charge you can have it if it fits.

Cheers Iain but I'm a large in a xen so I'd not squeeze into a 57-59

At least a 60 I think 🙁
