In a bid to try get myself back into riding I spent a tenner for a month of FulGaz to try ride the couple of mtb routes they have.
Spent a while messing with the settings to get my trainer set up correctly (KickR) and off I went.
Although nothing like real riding of course, up the first slog was as I remember it in real life effort wise and I settled in ready for the rest.
Over the top and started going down, which is where it went a bit weird.
My turbo is about 4 foot away from a 42" TV and as the course went over jumps and round berms, there was a distinct feeling of old 'Cine 2000' type displays where you used to stand up in a massive dome with the video on 180 degrees of the surface.
Whilst not as drastic as the original, it felt very odd at first as I 'felt' the first drop off and berm.
Not sure if this would be felt with a smaller screen but if you have a large display it's worth a play for the strange feeling. Still not sure if it's immersive or just a bit vommitty
Only rode for 30 minutes whilst getting back to it. Will do the full route next time.
Might build a rocker plate for the turbo now and see which way it goes - immersive or full on bucket needed. 😀
I filmed that 🙂 , the off road stuff is a challenge as on an indoor trainer you don’t have to worry about slowing for corners and so the speed get’s out of kilter and that amplifiers the undulations.
I have a smaller screen than you but I know what you mean about the motion feeling, and that also happen on the other trial routes.
There is route in a South African Game Reserve that is worth trying if you haven’t already not long but off road - https://fulgaz.com/fulgaz-rides/?fg_ride=72677edf300b9806321bd94f
I’ve used FulGaz for a couple years now I hope you enjoy some of the other routes road and off road it’s a good tool, I do a large amount of the road stuff on there, as they do translate obviously better to indoor 🙂
Tried it for the first time today - did a loop of Derwent reservoir in Durham. Surprised how good it was. Loads of routes - should keep me amused for a bit.
Just downloaded it. Been using Rouvy (which i like, although the screen doesn't always seem to exactly correspond with what the trainer is doing in terms of gradient) but am attracted to the idea of offroad and particularly Llandegla at warp speed! I'll report back in due course
I did this full Llandegla route earlier and really enjoyed it. I also ‘felt’ the first drops and berms. Nearly fell off leaning in. 🙂 I was using an old 50” plasma display so hardly surprising. I’d definitely do it again and other off road routes if I start using FulGaz beyond the trial. I think the Kielder reservoir route would be great on here. Nothing technical but plenty great off road scenery. Maybe I’ll video it in the spring.
It would be interesting to see Zwift doing some decent long off road implementations. I suppose some long fireroad climbs would be best. It would have to be limited rider numbers though otherwise it would look ridiculous.
