The freehub on my Fulcrum5 wheelset decided to quit today. At furthest point from home (50miles away) ... it decided to stop engaging.
The wheels were bought February last year, so not sure if its out of date for warranty. Does anybody know how long the warranty covers the freehub?
Not a fan of Fulcrum wheels after noticing they take inside seal off the cartridge bearings, hence why the bearings don`t last too long!
But the freehub packing in still surprised me. No warning - just working one moment. Free wheeled a bit, then went to pedal .. nothing!
If its not covered by warranty. Does anybody know if you can buy pawls and springs like Hope freehubs??
With most fulcrum wheels all you need to replace is the spring round the outside of the paws.
But can't say I've had any racing 5 apart Latley.
Spares are normal easy to get , look on the I-ride.co.uk site
Could be worse, my Giany P-SL1 freehub siezed solo'd for no apparent reason after around 2000 miles, unfixable by all accounts
yes prob the spring that broke, think they £1, also you can get pawls so no worry's on spares.
Thought it was the front bearings the removed (help with rolling resistance) just replace them with bearings with 2 seals.
Thanks all. Will try source the springs today.
On both sets of my Fulcrum wheels (3&5), the inside seals have all been removed. On the rear they pack hub full of what looks like lard.
Steve_B77 ... I can assure you it didn't feel like it could get worse yesterday.
Really strange that the bearings in their road wheels are only single-sided. I have a set of Fulcrum mtb clinchers and they are fully sealed (although to be fair the freehub bearings have lasted less than 800 miles).
It's the spring, it wraps around all 3 pawls rather than working independently.
10 minute job to replace but yeah, PITA I have one go every winter.
I only seem to be able to find springs for Campagnalo hub. Will these fit a shimano hub?
mooman, if you still having trouble in finding a spring, drop me a email and I pop one in the post for you.
Also they do CX racing 7 & 5 which are doubled sealed.
Had exactly the same issue with a set of little used fulcrum 5s last week - except free hub went at the end of our driveway.
just looked and they do the springs in boxes of 5 - bodes well
Yep campy spring works.
Campag own fulcrum
Thanks all.
And very gentlemanly and generous of you Rob.
Springs and complete set of new bearings all ordered thanks.
It's an easy fix, but major problem.
I really don't understand the benefit of removing inside seal and packing it with some sort of grease/lard.
And a thin wire around all pawls seems a rather fragile design too.
I would never get another set of Fulcrum wheels now.
