2011 Stumpjumper far, needing to replace frame bearings, realistically how difficult is this job to do?
You'll need a workstand. a blind bearing puller, possibly some penetrating / de-seizing spray, some patience to get the inevitable seized bearings out, and a decent bearing press with the right drifts for the size of bearings your frame takes to put the new ones back in.
It also helps to have a printout of the frame schematics for when parts inevitably drop all over the garage / shed floor. Available on Specialized's website.
Its not too hard but I'd say that you need a decent level of mechanical competence to do it yourself. Its very easy to write off a swingarm or a frame if you are not careful.
You don't need a workstand. Turn bike upside down and support rear triangle when you remove the shock.
Get some m8 studding, penny washers and a few nuts.
Get a concrete floor bolt (m6 m8 m10 and m12 size) - these make excellent bearing pullers.
Bit of wood dowel and plastic mallet.
The worst bearings to replace are those at the end of the swingarm.
Oh and don't believe the exploded diagram from specialized.... Mine had the bloomin wrong bearing sizes (for swingarm).
Not that difficult a job to be honest (but if you whack out an inner race leaving an outer then you will need to get creative in removal)
Can be done with home made tools (washers, studding, sockets) if you have reasonable mechanical skill. You might also find that only a couple need changing, especially if you catch any play early.
I got a blind bearing puller for about £6. It's not worth arseing around with bolts and washers.
Yep as nick says.... It's usually the drive side 6082 2rs bearing by the BB that go. The fsr linkage tiny bearings usually OK and you can just pop the seals and shove some good grease in there.
Don't buy the spesh bearing kits they are stupid money.
