i have a fsa zs orbit headset, and i had a clicking noise a few weeks back from it, when going over anything like a curb/rock sort of riding into them, click every time

i took the headset apart and greased everything up, tightened up a bit more than usual and silence for the next 4 rides, not a sound

then after a few rocky descents in the lakes sunday, i noticed it had come back again

and the last 2 rides since its been there too, again same sort of click noise, when hitting something straight on (like a curb/rock sticking out of ground

any ideas what im doing wrong? headset seems to have all the bits in place, and its only 3 months old from new, and bearings are like new too

Any play when you hold front brake and rock bike?

no cant say as there is tbh, its not loose as such, and when tightened up its not rattly on the descents either (feels pretty secure etc)

i can semi re-create the noise by pushing on the bike with the front brake on, admittedly not every time but intermittently it will make that same click noise

forks are brand new warranty replacement so its not that, as i had this noise before too

It's a very long shot but my mate had a similar issue with his headset and we were absolutely stumped.

Then he found he'd got a cracked shock mount (on his Orange Five).

I wouldn't have mentioned it but I seem to remember you being a Five owner?

cheers chakaping, i was bud yeh, good memory! not anymore though 🙂

its defo something at the front end this time, i can create the sound just pushing down on the bars with rest of bike still

thought it could even be cables, but its not them either, headset seems likely culprit given i regreased it a few weeks back and it was silent

the only thing i noticed is i have a diagram of the headset and installation, and i dont appear to have a rubber-oring fitted ontop of the upper bearing cover, not sure if this would affect it or not?! but id hazard a guess at not given it was silent after a regrease
