I've heard they are pretty bad for most of the winter months.
Any locals been up there lately?
There was still water running across the road at the top of the Chedder gorge last night. From that, I'm saying it isn't frozen enough yet and will be a bog fest still
not been up on the trails for ages - waiting for it to freeze properly. Base of the hills is still plenty gloopy under the surface frost and not that cold today.
Might be riding there tomorrow so can let you know if I do, that said I rode there just after the heavy rain a few weeks ago and quite enjoyed it. This is the open stuff though rather than the technical stuff in the woods which I imagine will be a quagmire for sometime to come.
Cheddar gorge had large patches of ice from the run off from Black Rock /Longwood valley last night and it has been like that since the weekend
Some locals aRe avoiding the top of Beacon batch at the moment to avoid knackereing the paths even more, they are in a pretty poor state at the moment
Was up Beacon batch last sunday on foot with the nipper. It is rather a soggy mess, and getting wider/deeper. The horses aren't helping. I'd give it a miss for a while.
Just back from a great ride around the gorge. No traffic as the road is still closed. The ground is frozen solid and theres still a river flowing down black rock, though where the water is coming from I dont know! Velvet Bottom was great as always, and the run down into cheddar was really fast. Highly recommended, go for it.
Was chatting to Box yesterday and he described trails as "crunchy". The rain has washed a lot of dirt away leaving more limestone bedrock in some places. Bear in mind it will warm up by the weekend and change. Suggest to avoid the worst drained Black Down trails until properly cold enough or til the spring drought. Tho it's not stopping the riding clubs mashing the bridal ways.

Which is why we need to extend the stealth network.
