Hi

In need of some help.

I opened the axle nuts, gently tapped the axle out. One bearing is stuck on the axle and the other bearing is in the hub. Look easy enough to remove (so i think)

I have watched loads of videos but every video explained about removal and installation of the cartridge bearings in the hub.

How does the bearing stuck on the axle differ to the hubs ones in terms of removal and installation?

After replacing both bearings if i get that far, my concern is when i knock the axle back into the hub it will push out the newly installed bearing from the hub.

Secondly any tips on how to remove the bearing stuck on the axle?

Thanks

do you have a vice?

if so, just place the bearing on the top of the jaws, so the axle hangs down between the jaws - but not held IN the jaws - and tap the top of the axle.

Hi,

No vice but i can improvise.

I understand what your saying....from what i remember though, the bearing on the axle had a collar behind it. I might be totally wrong but i think the bearing butted up against a flat bit of the axle.

You are right, the bearing rests on a raised flat section or collar on the axle. If you support the bearing on the edges of a vice or similar, long end down, short end with bearing on up. Then tap the axle end gently downwards until it is free.

As Alex said. I use a wooden mallet and tap gently as the axle is usually aluminum.

Hi

Thanks guys. I done it. I took them out and put them back in for practise.

I used an appropriately sized socket/wood to put the bearings back in.

Piece of cake now you have done it once 🙂 ! Getting the bearing while ensuring the pressure is only on the outer race is critical while keeping straight. I ended up getting a bearing press as it really made it easier.
