riding from Malham this afternoon and my mates front wheel went crack on a fast desent.when we stopped and checked out the wheel it had lost tension in every spoke on the front wheel ,it was un ridable . I have never come across this in 25 years of ATB riding ??

I split a hub once. Spokes fell off.
Never figured that out either.
