So I've finally got some 29" wheels for my Hightower and bought the aforementioned tyres.
Which way round would you mount them? I think I should put the High Roller 2 on the rear, but interested to hear some thoughts.
DHR2 on the front, especially if it’s Super Tacky.
Oh dear, I've just realised it's in the wrong forum. Cheers for the reply though 🙂
Interestingly, I'm running HR2 front and DHR2 rear, both in 2.4 flavour though, and love it! Not had any issues at all with grip so far, br contrast my mate is running Magic Mary on the front to keep up!
HR2 front and DHR2 rear
Worked very well for me too.
Did you not get one in 60a and one in 3c compounds? Or whatever they call them now.
Neither. DHF.
Fwiw I found the HR2 fairly sketchy on the front. Not as bad as the old Ines for the 'dead spot' of grip when leaning the bike over, but enough exciting moments to go back to a magic Mary pretty damn quick
Never tried a HR2, but I found the dhr2 on the front quite unpredictable. It was exo casing with 3c compound but I found it would suddenly wash out without warning - the DHF I've replaced it with feels so much nicer to me.

Agreed
I hate the HR2 on the front, but conversely I quite like it on the rear.
DHR2 is a pretty good all rounder on the front or back to be fair.
Depends on the width - the 2.3 HR2 has pretty feeble side knobs. The 2.3 DHR2 is better in that respect. I like the 2.4 HR2 on the front, it grabs and rails.
Haven’t tried the 2.4 DHR2 - but having seen them I’d say it would be good up front or put back.
Currently running 2.4 HR2 front, 2.3 DHR2 rear on one bike, 2.5 DHF front, 2.3 DHR2 rear on the other. All 3C.

I tried a 2.4 and just didn't get in with it. It never washed out fully, it would break away and then catch when you were pushing hard into corners, all too alarming for me and found I was tensing up when leaning the bike up because of it. But different rims deliver different profiles and strangely I find different tyres perform differently on different bikes with the same wheels
Both tyres are the 3c 2.3 version.
I ended up mounting the DHR on the front, so I'll give it a try tomorrow. They were a last minute purchase so I can try my new fancy wheels tomorrow.
Guess I better get the plus wheels up for sale as I can't see me changing them over again.
That’s pretty much classic HR behaviour I think, the ‘dead zone’ between the centre tread and the edge. A lot of people dislike the HR as a front for this reason...
I've got a HR2 2.4 60 and a Dhr2 2.3 2c which way round would people put them?

DHR2 is a great tyre on the rear, but the 3C compound is very draggy on the rear. personally I wouldn't use the normal dual compound (60a) HR2 on the front. I'm aware that's not much help
2.4 hr2 worked very well for me on 35mm rims up front, go to all round tyre, everything up to full on mud- when it's shorty time.
Never had the washing out problem, not sure how it'd be on narrower rims
The 29er hr2 is pretty bad, so I'd definitely put it on the back. The 3c version I had fell apart pretty quickly too. It's a very different beast to the 2.4 version for 650b wheels, which I thought was great after borrowing a mk 3 nomad for a while.
Buying 2 hr2s was an expensive mistake...

Neither. DHF.
This. Hate High Rollers & DHR2 wasn't much better. DHF is sublime.
+1 DHF up front. Not tried DHR2 though, but what I like about the DHF is it's a straight line cutter through crud and loose stuff. HR2 on front is not that. Reminds me of a Hans Dampf, which I found was all over the place on loose stuff. HR2 on the rear however is good on descending. Loads of grip. Far too draggy for flat speed though. Prefer Ardents generally on the back.
Depends on the conditions. The hr2 isn't particularly good for any and is quite draggy. I've got an DHR2 on the rear at the moment and it's terrible in any sort of soft conditions. I wouldn't a DHF (also have) in the current conditions unless you are sticking to hard wearing trail centre paths.

This is my thoughts too. Found HR2 ok on the front for trail centre in the summer, but useless anywhere that is loose or muddy. Tried it on the rear (2.3) and it just clogged up with mud almost instantly. It cleared once you picked up some speed but for steep tight technical stuff and climbing it was painful.
Muddy Mary. Perfect front tyre all year round.
Trusty - is the 29er HR2 available in 2.4? I’ve noticed a huge difference between the 650b 2.3 and 2.4, wondering if it’s the same on 29...

No idea. I went back to schwalbe after that, mm and NN combo which I'm still running. It was a shame, as I loved the hr 2.4 on the nomad but couldn't get on with the 2.3. It didn't help that all the edge knobs fell off the 3c version really quickly as well.
Some interesting replies on this.
I had a Magic Mary/Hans Dampf combo on my Stumpy and found them very draggy (but very grippy). Switched to High Roller 2 rear and DHF front and loved it.
Got the DHR in 29" because it was cheap and they didn't have any DHF in stock.
I'll give it a try for a bit and maybe I'll get a DHF when funds allow again, then switch the DHR to the back.
Curious to see if folk are running the DHRII in 2.3 on the back with a 30m internal rim and what their experience has been? Or is it best to go for a 2.4?
