looking to change the front wheel of a tandem to disc from v brake, this may go onto one of 2 tandems, first is a med med tandem ridden by wife and i combined weight 18-19 stone, the other is a kiddy back tandem combined weght or riders is 13 stone. tandems are used for road riding and forest tracks dirt roads so pretty smooth stuff, will a 32 or 36 spoked wheel be ok for this or should i stick with a 48 as came on the tandem. i'm thinking of a hope xc hub on a mavic rim

Wheels do take a beating - I'd be tempted to go for ahigher spoke count if you can - mind yo a=our rear is 36 spokes and just about survives.
Good wheel build and strong rim will help of course and is the xc hub strong enough? How about

Is hub strength an issue on the front?
Yes. Much higher loadings hence tandem specific hubs. 🙄
I run 36 hole Mavic 521's which have stood up to a rider weight of 22ish stone, doing similar terrain with panniers
I run 203/185 discs with a rear stoker V-Brake also.
Discs get hot quickly on a tandem with this kind of weight on.
We're running a 36 spoke pro 2 on the front of our tandem, but it's not heavily used. It's 20mm bolt through and fitted to 150mm z150s
will be fitted to a rigid fork qr witha a 160 or 180 rotor
