The drop out slot is a little too large and the clamping force from the QR isn't enough to prevent it shifting so tyre rubs on mudguard. Any one know ofsolutions for this for of thing please?

Weld the dropouts on the other way around.
^^^^ Pah, offering sensible real world advice.
Shimano QR +1
Never had any issues
Replace your forks if the dropouts are damaged.
Get a good quality Shimano QR skewer. Learn how to tighten it properly. If the wheel is moving in the dropouts, you are in danger of a serious crash.
Make sure the axle is centred, so the QR is clamping down on the drop out and not the end of the axle.
There are *very* few skewers that can't develop enough force to stop a wheel moving round, unless they've been left and/or abused, the drop outs are damaged or you're not physically able to do them up. Or they are "security bolt throughs", which are bloody useless.
Swap the QR axle for a (9 or 10mm) solid one with big nuts on the ends (NB not a security bolt through QR)
We used to have this years ago before 20mm axles became a thing. Even with Shimano QRs all that happened is that the dropouts got chewed up instead.
Yes, internal or enclosed cam skewer has greater clamping force and doesn't use a plastic washer that deforms
Check that the dropouts are straight rather than bent in some way
Dropouts on a QR disc fork ideally face slightly forwards rather than vertically down
Shimano QR - I don't use anything else !
I had a Carrera Subway I picked up secondhand and the qr wouldn’t hold the wheel properly straight. Switched to a Shimano deore qr and no further issues after that. Some of the cheap / aftermarket ones don’t seem to clamp as well.
Another +1 for Shimano QR. It often used to be a issue for disk braked bikes before through axles became the norm. The cure was always a Shimano QR. Should be able to pick one up more or less for free now.
Shimano QR, although they're not completely invincible, eventually they fail and the axle can wobble around in the end cap even when clamped.
Mavic, Campagnolo and Fulcrum also all make (or made) nice closed cam QRs. I've got lovely modern Campagnolo ones on my disc/QR gravel bike.
I had a Carrera Subway
Yeah this is a Carrera too. Have got a Shimano QR knocking about somewhere will try that. Cheers
Weld the dropouts on the other way around.
Never really looked at them that closely before but you might be on to something here!
Having watched a friend wake up from a two week coma due to a front wheel disconnecting from dropouts (on QR plus discs) I would be VERY sensitive about perhaps looking for a new fork and a better QR.
It's the same accident that paralysed that Russ chap.
Bolt through for the win.
Weld the dropouts on the other way around.
Or run the fork backwards.
Didn't happen, all your fault, it's not the USA, think of the bike builders. If the skewer slips, it was your fault for doing it too loose, If the skewer breaks, it was your fault for doing it too tight.
Does that cover it all?
Don't use a stick as your axle?
A closer inspection with QR skewer removed while wheel in place reveals the problem...
... Drop outs aren't thick enough so the axle protrudes ~0.75mm each side. Guess I better put the stock wheel back in then.
Not the QR I repeat not the QR!!!
Hang on QR skewers are designed so a little protrusion from axle isn't a problem. Uhuhhhh,....
Washer on axle so it sits inside of fork will shorten that excess axle. As Tony Olicer rightly pointed out, a very good Qr will work with no axle in perfect conditions.
Cheapo 9mm through axles work well if you are the worrying type.
Never an external cam Qr
Looking for a 100mm X 9mm option to replace my QR - I've seen the Halo Hex and if I ship from U.S. I can get a Hadley. Can anyone recommend something else? Ideally something nice.
Hex key skewers? Halo ones are decent
Decent security, pretty poor end load.
Skewers are too long and thin to work well like that.
+1 for a decent QR like Shimano
