My friend and I are going for a ride tonight near macclesfield Forrest on a road bike and he's brought it into work and the front mech is seized solid and stuck on the big ring.

I have suggested we remove his front mech and move the chain onto the small ring manually.

To put his mind at rest... it won't make any difference not having the front mech when it doesn't work right?!

I know it doesn't hold the chain in place or anything like that he needs confirmation that im not going to leave him stranded lol

Unfortunately for now we will need to cut the mech as the chain doesn't have a split link so we cannot put it back either!

cheers
Christian

Can you get some plusgas in there and start to work it?

Chopping it needs to be the last resort.

And it should be fine on the small ring with no mech.

Take chain off.

Drip oil onto mech pivots.

Move mech over with foot, lever back again - repeat. Should free up after a bit.

Had to do this last week myself!

Doesn't the front mech have a screw to open the mech cage? I know that every one of mine do, but they're all Shimano.

And if you don't have a chain tool, just do a flat route instead and fix it later?

not all of them do. my mate had an slx one that had a rivet in place of the screw. the mech was knackered and i couldnt find none of my 3 chain tools so i had to chop it off with a dremel

Front mechs are the spawn of satan. Swapped a Deore for an XT the other day there was absolutely no difference apart from a few holes in the XT's cage.

And the bit of paper that warns about some gear combos causing the chain to come into contact with the mech. WTAF does it work or doesn't it?

1x is the future

I have split a chain and pushed the same pin back in with the chain splitter on completion, maybe just lucky but it never came out again.

As my friend doesn't beleive me... we can run the on either of the 2 front chain rings without a front mech (and the chain won't fall off) however we will need to move the chain over manually... right?

🙂
