i recently changed the front mech on my Klein Attitude to an XTR bottom swing. After years of crap shifting at the front i finally realised that there isn't room between the frame and the granny ring for the original top swing mech to change down, it just fowled the frame. as a result of this the new mech was a revelation (and so it should be at that price)

BUT

the change of cable path (bottom pull) has resulted in the cable fowling on the frame and it's started to saw it's way through the chain stay and is causing the cable to fray.

Have i angered the MTB gods by fitting a bottom swing mech on a bike designed for a top swing? Is there a top swing mech that will provide enough clearance for the granny ring or do i need to buy a longer BB? (not easy as it's square taper)

help!

i really do not want to kill my klein i's my pride and joy 🙁

[EDIT] i got bottom and top swing the wrong way round, now corrected

it is a bottom pull still but the direction of the cable has changed so it rubs:

Is the hole through the frame straight?

I assume it must be to allow the cable to go through without a guide... if so, could you put a small piece of copper pipe through the hole for the cable to run through?

If this pipe were to sit flush with the bike frame it would (in the theory in my head, at least) look tidy and prevent the 'sawing' of the frame.

FWIW, hobby stores always have small gauge pipe about - or at least did in my youth!

thanks, i was thinking of something like that or extending the liner for the internal cable routing all the way up through the chain stay

crikey, what a horrendous design with a hole with a cable through it right next to the weld!

I'd run a bit of PTFE or nylon tubing up through the hole. Got a few different diameters lying around if you need some.

Or possibly better still will some outer fit in the hole? Could just run a short length inside the chainstay.

Maybe fashion something out of an old V brake noodle?

I'd just run some protective cable through the hole. Your LBS will probably have some.
