I've just fitted a brand new XT front mech (free from fellow forumite, thank you) to mrs_oab's Liv Lust.
It's direct mount.
28t and 34t RaceFace chainrings.
XT shifter and new cable.
Stops adjusted well.
It just doesn't seem to sit low enough.
It's hesitant to shift. One of those where I've spent an hour faffing with cable tension. Without any change it's alternating between hesitant up and hesitant down.
Normally I can get mechs spot on without hassle, but this one has me stumped without being able to drop it a few more mm.
Thoughts?
Start with the obvious - definitely a 2x mech?
Are there two ways to route the cable & have you tried both?
Why bother worrying about it with such a small difference in size between the chainrings? Stick a compromise 1x chainring on there and have done with it.
Are the rings definitely 2x rings? You've not just fitted a granny to a 1x setup?
XT double chainsets had a 12T or 14T difference in the rings but you have a 6T difference. The mech could be swinging through too much of an arc to work nicely with rings so close in size.
Maybe think about putting on a double wide front ring and selling the front mech?
I think there were a couple of models, a high and a low one. But it has been a while since I used a double chainring.. Photo would help.

Yeah just replace the whole lot LOL

This. You've probably got the wrong mech. You'll have the one meant to work with bigger chainrings.
Look up the model number on https://si.shimano.com and it tell you in the specs.
I've just been and checked.
The rings are original to the bike, a 24t and 36t (so correct 12t difference). It's a proper inner (not the 28t narrow/wide I removed) and outer with all the shift ramps on it.
It's a shifter with 2x or 3x switch, I'm on 2x. It's top or bottom pull - cable is led up from bottom, over the lever and out to clamp. I'm 100% sure the routing is correct.
How can I tell if the mech is 2x or 3x?
It's for mrs_oab, we've run it 1x10 for a year, and she just wants wider great range. The whole drivetrain was new when we bought the bike, I'm not chucking it for 1x12 or 1x11 yet...
I'll go and check Shimano site...
Did you go for Side Swing Matt?
The model number will be marked on it FDM786-D for example - that will help tell whether double or triple.
