For some odd reason my 500 mile old giant slr wheels have play in them. It could have been there since I bought the bike, in which case the wheel is faulty, but goimg to check the bearings just in case. Seems unikley though, 500 dry miles, and they seem fine when ive taken the end caps off but maybe need further inspection.
First question..how the hell do i get them out? Cant get any purchase on them through the inside edge to drift them out. Do i need a tool?
Second, the bearing is a 6902rs. I have a wheelset spare with some brand new 6901 2rs. Any chance they are interchangeable?

No, they're completely different sizes.
I just dismantled the spare before I read your reply. you,re right they are!
So what took do i need to extract the bearings then?
A hammer and screwdriver...... or a bike shop
Rear? Threaded end cap not preloaded tight?
It's the front..I'm not sure it's worth removing the bearings, they look and feel brand new to me. But there is definitely play in the hub, you can hear it when you grip the tyre and push it from side to side. Couple of mmm worth of play
Not noticed it on the bike, but does seem odd as I haven't got the same issue for any other of my bikes. Would take it to the lbs, but kind of goes against the mantra of essential travel.
There is a little movement when I slot the end caps into the bearing, almost like they are undersized, but it's happening on both sides so unlikely. Likewise, no way both bearings are shot. It's done 320 dry miles according to strava
is it a maxle? sometimes you can get the maxle appear to be tight before its actually taken all the end float out. Is the movement along the line of the axle? - end float or is the wheel wobbling? - play in the bearings
Feels much more like the bearings. But as I say they are virtually new and feel buttery smooth.
It's not bad, it's still ridable, but it doesn't feel right. Think I'll leave it a month or so then take it to the shop for a second opinion.
For future reference however, is a hammer and screwdriver the only way to get the bearings out, or is there specific tool?
Blind bearing puller if you can't drift
or is there specific tool
Blind puller, expands inside the bearing, you can then pull it out with a slide hammer, knock it out with a punch from the other side, or use a stand off to pull it off the hub shell.
Most people will catch the edge of the inner race with a punch, you can normally push the internal spacer tube slightly to the side.
You won't damage anything by riding it.
Shame there's no adjustment, that is a crappy lifespan.
