[Closed] front derailleur behaving oddly...

I'm sure this is something so obvious that I'm going to regret asking, but I can't see the problem, so here's a question for the good people of STW to go with the traditional Friday morning butties.

My front mech began the week shifting down ok, but only wants to shift up if I select the smallest sprocket. It's progressed and is iffy about letting me have the small ring if I'm down the bottom of the cassette now.

This was all working properly so I'm discounting headbanger like type2 rear mech being fierce or chain wrong length although it might actually be an inch long.

Rear hanger was replaced recently. Tbh, I'm thinking freehub if the hanger is straight - cage looks fine.

All opinions welcomed! 🙂

Has the cable to the front mech lost some tension?
Check limit screw & that mech runs straight to the front chainring

It's a sign. Go 1x10/11.

literally no idea!

as for the front mech, counter to answer 1, sounds like cable might be too tight or sticking, if it was too loose, it would just drop to the minimum stop easily, and you'd struggle getting the big ring. too tight a cable might not allow it to go fully back. replace cable and tension it correctly.
Also check its not twisted out of line, the outer cage should run parallel to the chainrings.
Also, you need to know about cross chain running. you shouldn't ride in small small...

Is it a band mounted or direct mount?
The reason I ask is that exactly the same issues happened to a friends Canyon Strive with direct mount and it turned out to be the plate holding the mech had fractured at one end in a place that wasn't easily visible and was thus flexing just enough around the remaining bolt for the whole mech to move sideways a very small amount. From the side, it looked perfectly OK

Soul is already 1x10 :p. I'm keeping the bouncy bike 2x for now.

Comment on the t2 mech was regarding sram's approach to clutches as opposed to shadowplus.

Front mech is an E2 mounted to a plate on the chainstay so isn't twisted. Cable tension could be the issue but I'd expect that to be causing a problem more one way than the other, really.

Just had the wheel off and rear cage and hanger are both straight according to my Allan key, but the rear mech had vibrated loose a little. Could that have been the issue or should I keep looking?

Limited time today and don't really want a parts allover epic hence the silly question rather than working it out. If I have to, I have everything to rebuild my pro2 and it would let me get the 10mm qr kit fitted I've been putting off, but as I say, time is short...

I didn't think crosschaining was such a problem on 2x as it is on triples. I thought that was part of the point. Front mech is double specific with shorter cage and doesn't really rub in extremes.

Admittedly, I wouldn't willingly be in those extremes (small/small big/big) if the front shift was operating as intended! 🙂

not as much, but it is still an issue at the absolute extremes.

Only if you are not using a 2x chainset & matching BB or a 3x with optimised chain line using BB spacing.

Let the chainline wars begin!

It's a pressfit bb92 so little control over chainline.

I've remounted after tweaking things that have worked loose and tightened the front cable.

Pretty much shifting as expected now, although with bike upside down (stand is 100 miles away) it's not actually possible to select smallsmall as there's too much chain and mech reaches cassette. It's a 140mm bike and doesn't seem to do this while riding when there's some compression on the frame. I'm assuming it's mostly because the bike is upside down, but should I revisit chain length? I did the usual 'air out and full travel' when setting up.

does sound like the chain is too long now to be honest!

I'm thinking so.

Last year I had a stupid failure due to forgetting to account for chaingrowth and I may have overcomplicated. I'm not worried about carrying extra chain from a weight point, and I know those low ratios do work in real life from climbing...

I think if it's all working again I'll monitor for now and remeasure for next chain rather than taking length from existing. BB is due up pretty soon, too...

I had a massive ball ache setting up my E2 front mech yesterday and would not want to do it again.

A friend shortened the chain for me and that improved shifting and the chainline quite a bit.

Even with an E2 there is some fine tuning for derailleur height. The manual makes it look quite black and white, but this is a lie. At the quoted height I had the chain sitting too high on the mech when in the small front/large rear.

Good luck.
