Hello

My partner has a Voodoo Soukri that we purchased last July time, the bike has been great until today. Out on a ride she experienced the chain jamming against the frame on 2 occasions. To me, the front chain ring looks very close to the frame to start with. The chain ring does not feel loose, nor does there seem to be much play in the BB when grabbing the cranks although obviously more force is applied with legs I guess. Any clues what maybe causing this? Sprocket and frame

Thanks
Steve

I have bikes with less clearance than that. One is barely a fag paper. Never had an issue

chain suck?

Unless there’s something seriously wrong with the bb or the frame is broken that shouldn’t be hitting the frame. I had one frame where there was at best 2mm clearance between the ring and the stay - no issues with that.

Is the chain staying stuck to the chainring (chain suck) and that’s what’s hitting the chainstay? If so then it’s likely the chain / ring are worn out and need replacing.

Yeah, as JoeB says, likely the chain is hooking up on the chainring due to wear.
My Throttle actually has scuffs from the chain(ring, obvs) where its so close to the frame, but cos 1x , no chainsuck.

As above, chain ring clearance is fine. If there's any play in the bottom bracket, it should be only just detectable.

How much riding in what conditions? A year old might not be that much. Could also be a stiff link or a sticky freehub.

Sounds like a prime candidate for chain suck. When was the last time a new chain was put on the bike OP?

Yeah, chain suck is a thing unfortunately with two chainrings. You only might have a problem if there's enough room to get it jammed in there but not enough to get it out cos you end up damaging it. If it just hits the frame then you back pedal and it's ok again, then you just have to carry on.

It happens when it's really wet and muddy, and/or when the chainrings are worn. However that looks fairly new in that picture so possibly not worn.

Maybe the chainring has got clouted on a rock and a bit burred or bent?
Stiff link can do it too.
And once it happens it keeps happening.

Worst case it can chew through the frame or set up stress risers that cause cracks later on.

Some people moan about these things until ten years later the designer personally refunds them all their money.

Thanks all. Just checked the chain, definitely worn on my gauge. I initially panicked as I thought the gap between the chain ring and the frame was too small, but you have all reassured me about that bit. New chain later in the week and see how she go's.
Many thanks

LOL Brant.

That chain looks quite dry and gunky. Maybe it just needs to be cleaned and relubed to stop the chain suck.

Or they're told that if they don't like it, they can always hit it with a hammer.

That split link is in upside down for a start.
On a related note I serviced a Voodoo recently where the BB had completely unscrewed itself from the shell and was grinding the back off the drive side crank so don’t rule out the Halfords factor.

Just out of curiosity someone mentioned the quick-link to be fitted the wrong way around. Is this picture correct? I really didn't realise that those Shimano quick links could be fitted wrong Quick Link https://ibb.co/yqcGSPK
