but returns 5 or 10 minutes later when the next braking sequence starts. Why?

Could it be clearing the build up of dust or maybe the pads heating up.

Pretty sure its not water or oil contamination of the disks & pads. Hasn't rained here for weeks. Pads & disks been thoroughly cleaned with IPA and sanded. Caliper carefully aligned and pistons centralised, one piston slightly lazy though.

Maybe the caliper/pad/rotor combination is particularly sensitive to resonance?

Thought for a while it might the post mount facing, but lately been running the Avid 20mm spacers with 2 x conical washers which should adjust for any misalignment.

Running Formula Cura calipers with own brand organic pads and XTR rotors.

When the brakes are howling do they still stop you? If they do then who cares.

I think it's your username causing the problem, change that and the squealing will probably go away. (Sorry I don't have anything sensible to contribute)

Fair point. Many years ago I really did have squealing brakes (Hope Minis). Today's problem is on a much lesser scale. I have just the bar lower.

And yes the brakes do stop well.
