I'm about to buy some new cranks, but I can't find an oval chainring in the size I want... I can get normal round though..

I've had oval for about 6 months and don't think I noticed a difference, so if I change back will I die?

Anyone else done this and managed to escape Death?

Nope. Changed 32:19 oval SS to 38:17 round for a race. Died in a very metaphorical sense, lost 100 places in a lap. Awful. Then I put the oval back on and snapped 3 ligaments in my shoulder. Just had reconstructive surgery and I'm off the bike for another 2 or 3 months.

Hope this helps.

So, what your're saying is... Go back to round, ok as long as I don't mind losing a place or 2...... but don't even think about returning to oval or the bike will bite me..? 😯

Hell hath no fury like a chainring shape scorned.

Effect of removal is the reverse of installation.

I think, being a super sleuth ... The ratio change was the cause of metaphorical death, irrespective of the shape of your ring ....

Ha! It was for Battle on the Beach. Gear was good, but I went too hard on the first lap and blew up

Phil, are you under 20 and over 12 years old ?
Thinking of changing from a round chain ring?
Like a warm drink and a biscuit in the evening?

Could I suggest Ovaltine ?
