While I hate to agree with a nichemonger, I agree with the nichemonger...

I'm not sure about this plus bike thing. They look interesting but I had some pretty low pressure in my front tyre the other week and on a g out it folded over and threw me over the bars. What's the point in massive tyres if you still need highish pressures so you can ride normally?

The wider rims mean they're much more stable than a normal tyre.

Never had issues with tubeless 4" tyres on my fatty folding on corners even at 5 or 6 psi and pushing hard round the woods.

My rim/tyre ratio can't be far off, I have Flow EX with a Magic Mary on the front. The pressure was low but not low enough to do any damage to the rim over roots and rocks. Maybe I was just unlucky?

Keep up. People are running 12-15 psi in plus tyres and 6psi in fatbike tyres...

Big fat tyres still fold but not in the same way as a higher pressure smaller tyres, its much more progressive as opposed to the 'collapse' of folding a small tyre.

I hate tyre that collapse, to the point that even in CX races i run a little higher, but ive yet to have my fat bike tyres fold in quite the same dramatic way as smaller tyres. There is a case for slightly higher pressures when you can (i.e. with a sus fork) as the folding/rolling of the tyre on the rim can be felt and does require additional/different steering input (but the bikes steer differently anyway so not really a problem).

I don't know the physics of it but empirically it's a complete non-problem.

Maybe it's because the volume of a 4" tyre is four times larger than that of a 2" one?

Well it gives me a good excuse to try and test ride a 6fattie to see how right you guys are. I really do like the look of them but I would want the carbon version because of the swat door and £3500 seems a tad steep. Although that orange does look ace.

Chubby bikes - Of the three different ones I've ridden at length so far I've not noticed any issues with cornering flop, even when the pressures hover around 10 psi - and I'm a big chap. They've had loads of traction, a lot of road buzz on tarmac and zero issues cornering.

We've found that you DO need to be very precise with tyre pressures though - to the point where a digital gauge is a pretty good idea...

I got over 40mph down the local 'steep tarmac descent into town' on my fatty with a Bud on the front. It sounded like a Stuka in a power dive.

That sounds like a ball ache.

It's not that big a deal it's just at low pressures a 10% difference can make a big difference.

I just check pressures each ride like I do on all my other bikes (they all bleed air a little when run tubeless).

You _Ache anyway so it's only an incremental ache on top of your existing burden 😉
