The freewheel on my rear hub has gone really sticky. Is there a way to fix this? It's a Shimano Deore cup and cone one.

If not, what options are there for affordable sealed bearing hubs, as I'm getting a bit fed up of cup and cone (call me lazy if you want), but I don't want to spend £150 on a rear hub for a commuter bike.

Just get a new freehub and swop it over. Tools needed are a pair of cone spanners and a large allen key and a blob of grease. To be honest shimano hubs are great in design, don't think that cartridge bearings are any better. I have changed 5 bearings in various bikes this weekend, as sealed maintenance free bearings they are not. Hope Goldtec etc, so not cheapies and oem bearings too.

There are plenty of videos on youtube for the removal of the freehub.

The freehub can be flushed out and re-oiled if you don't fancy buying a new one.

Its sometimes as cheap to buy a complete hub as just a freehub. Then you have a full set of spares
