Morning all,
Chisel FS (stock wheels) with 600 miles on the clock.
1- I've had to re-tighten the rear axle a few times, might be normal.
2- Ghost shifting appeared about 100 miles ago.
3- A light rubbing sound appeared whilst pedalling at low speeds about 50 miles ago (not the brake).
4- Yesterday - the freehub 'click' sounds weird and random/out of sync. Suspect the issue is here.
Got to run various errands today, before getting back to clean and inspect the bike.Â
Any advice on what to inspect and/or look out for?
Quite familiar with typical Mavic/DT road stuff, but not ever attempted to troubleshoot a Shimano/Speciallized mongrel (is it any different?).
Â
Rear axle is a frame thing rather than a hub thing. Might have been under-torqued, might be a misalignment issue (though that would be clear when fitting the axle), might be a rear triangle flex thing leading to the axle walking out slowly - this could also cause brake rub.
Â
Rear hub looks to be a Shimano MT410? If so, it’s a cartridge bearing hub with a serviceable 3 pawl freehub, so should be straightforward to pull apart to inspect/clean&lube.
Thanks @sillyoldman - it was very easy. As you say, it's all cartridge bearings.Â
So after a little digging, there are a few issues:
1- Rough bearings - water and mileage could well be the cause, but it still doesn't explain the symptoms.
2- The thru-axle only engages 4 threads on the frame. Something must be out of alignment, explaining why I've had to adjust the rear caliper, as well as ghost shifting.
End caps etc all seemed secure... the back wheel has only been out four times since buying the bike, so not quite sure what happened there.
Ordered a new set of wheels to play on whilst I put new bearings in, and troubleshoot the weird spacing. 🤞
EDIT - the NDS end cap (screw on type) was loose.
I turned it, and noticed the axle didn't turn with it - how on earth it got loose in the first place I don't know. 🤷♂️
So, it's just new bearings on the list. 👍
Update:
While waiting for my new bearings and new wheels, I took the bike for one more rip with the end cap tightened properly. It came loose again after one ride.
Stripped the wheel down. While doing that I noticed side-to-side play in the axle. I also noticed the outermost bearings (1x6903 on NDS, and 1x6802 on the freehub) were spinning ridiculously easily - either loose, or dry. They were clean, and had no corrosion when I removed the seals... but the wheel felt rough when ran on the axle.
New 6903 main bearings, and 6802/6803 bearings in the hub. No play. Axle feels just as goopy as the front wheel now. 👍
The question is, would a bad bearing cause the axle to spin which effectively undoes the NDS end cap? Or, did one of the bearings walk out causing premature wear?
Being the outermost bearings, I suspect it's washout... but I see no evidence of water or corrosion. 🤷♂️
I had ghost shifting and funny clicking of the freehub when coasting, quite a bit of play in the cassette, was the outermost freehub bearing , dt 350 hub with a lot of miles!
Â
the rear axle is under a lot of load so if the cassette is wobbling around it could cause issuesÂ
