Anyone know what Allen Key/Hex size to open up a Shimano freehub? Trying to find an Allen Key bigger than 8mm in the shops is impossible so just want to make sure I order the right size.

BTW, I'm assuming they're serviceable? When I last had the cassette off I noticed mine felt a bit gritty and wobbly.

Cheers 🙂

*hollow laughter*

you can try flushing it through with degreaser, rinse and dry but it tends to be a short term solution, ime.

Do check prices on new hubs from crc etc before you buy just a freehub, prices are sometimes not much different and you get a new axle and set of bearings with a new hub...

Good to know, thanks.

What about the Allen Key size?

10mm usually.

I just got a 10mm hex 1/2" drive socket from my local Halfords and used that.

Good idea. I did think of that but worried it might not be long enough. Thanks.

measure how far you need to go in using your 8mm key and you'll be sure the 10mm is long enough then.

most sets, even cheap ones, have 10mm keys in.
