I am shifting wheels around and going back to a 29 inch wheel on the FlareMax after a winter on a 27.5 plus.
The my old 29 inch wheel has a std Shimano no free hub on it - it measures 34 mm long from the end on the indents on the inner part, to the outer edge. This has run with a sunrace 11 speed cassette absolutely no problem.
On the 27.5 wheel is used ( also Hope) the free hub measures 38 mm the same distance. So I had to run a spacer on cassette to stop it wobbling.
My new wheel came with SRAM Driver, so I have popped this off, and put an older Shimano freehub on ... it is also of the smaller size. The 11 speed cassette fits ... and it doesn’t need a spacer. 1) Why are there two different free hub body sizes 2) will I die if I use the smaller one, and no spacer. I assume this just moves the Hi /Low settings inboard more ....
Any thoughts?
Are they the same Hope hubs?
e.g. pro2/pro2 EVO have different diameter axles and freehubs aren't interchangeable.
You'd need to check the internal dimensions along the bearings etc., or alternatively email or call Hope and ask them once you are sure of the model (plus whether it's boost etc).
1) Why are there two different free hub body sizes
Because road 11spd cassettes need a longer freehub body than mtb 11spd ones do.
All MTB freehubs ... don’t do road stuff
Two are possibly ex 8/10 speed ...
And off a Hope Evo2
And the freehub fitted to a Hope Evo does fit a Evo4 ... in terms of going onto the hub.....
That said, I will now use the freehub off the Evo4 27.5 ....
All MTB freehubs … don’t do road stuff
All current Hope hubs with a Shimano freehub are all 11spd road length now and come with a spacer.
The difference should be 1.85mm. Road cassettes are 1.85mm wider than MTB so using a spacer means brands only need to manufacture 1 freehub.
