Building a tandem and want to use as many parts from my shed as possible. So here are my questions:

1.Can I run 3x8 Sora STI levers with my vintage 3x8 MTB drivetrain?

2. What are my chances of getting new 3x8 STI type levers (either Shimano or 3rd party) that are better than Sora?

Thanks in advance

I've used Mtb stuff on my 'cross bike, paired up with Sora STI shifters with no problems. I'm sure it would work. I've always liked Sora 8 speed shifters so wouldn't recommend anything else.

Good to know. Thanks. Was your kit 8spd?

Yes it was 8 speed. Used with a variety of 8 speed mtb components as I preferred lower gearing on the 'cross bike 🙂

Road sti "shouldn't" work with a mtb front mech - cable pull is different.

3 x 8 mtb sti is still available new. No drop bar stuff available that is better than Sora. Dunno about road flat bar.

2. Are you absolutely wedded to STI?

If not, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Dura-Ace 7700 9 spd bar-end shifters on friction mode. I'm running a couple of bikes with mixtures of road and MTB, 7/8/9 spd transmission set-ups with them (on friction), and they are faultless.
