You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Off to the Vosges later in the year, and exploring options for maps. Plenty of .GPX files online, and with a bit of careful research easy to pull together what seem like decent off road loops.
Do you have any pointers on
1. How to edit and create new GPX routes using an underlying detailed map as a template?
2. What options to use when out on the trails - ideally I'd like to see a detailed base map.
Ideally this would be a match to something like OS mapping (online) and xfr of .GPX file to the OS Android App on my phone that I can check in with every now and again to see if I am on track.
Thanks, in advance
1. RideWithGPS would be my choice but others exist
2. The RideWithGPS app will overlay onto OSM/OCM maps; the IGN Géoportail app will give you IGN mapping (equivalent of OS); not aware of anything which will overlay routes onto IGN without paying, but there may be something
I use viewranger but you need to buy IGN maps. That does make them available offline. Handy when you get into the mountains. You can download open cycle maps for free which are pretty good.
Another favourite of mine is Alpine Quest with a strava heat map as a base map. That works well to find the local honey spots. It can be a bit vague in some areas but anywhere with lots of activity you can pretty much guarantee is good riding.
Not what you asked but a Trailforks type site with tracks for MTB in France : https://www.utagawavtt.com/
Thanks for replies so far, open street map gives me some detail and GPS traces, but I can't create a new GPX route/
@Bez, I don't mind paying some ££'s to get a decent map but couldn't see on the Website how to do this, mind you my french isn't the best. Is the App better?
open street map gives me some detail and GPS traces, but I can’t create a new GPX route/
Open street map is a map set. You can open it in loads of different apps on the laptop or mobile. Some will let you draw a gpx. I use viewranger but there are many more.
As above. Go to RideWithGPS, Viewranger, Strava, Komoot or any number of other route plotting sites and you’ll be able to plot routes with Openstreetmap mapping (in various forms) underneath.
The Géoportail app is just maps. It’s free, but you don’t get offline maps (ie you need a data connection when viewing them) and it doesn’t display GPX files over the map.
Create routes with Ridewithgps.com and view them on your phone with backcountry navigator app. Openfietsmaps does downloadable free osm maps for Garmins.
+1 for ViewRanger
I use bike-hike to create the route and ViewRanger to follow it.
OK it won't post my link for whatever reason but basically search for an app called 'iPhiGéNie' there you can get IGN maps for the whole of France (IGN is French OS), you can have them offline and you can create routes and upload your own files to it plus a million other functions, there's even a full 3D map!
