As you may have seen, i was going to buy the boy a Bird Aeris 1.5 this week but that deal ended up going south, so we're still in the search for a new one.

This will replace his small 2016/17 Specialized Stumpjumper 650B. Reason will be, to increase his sizing because he's growing lots.

So ideally it's a 148*12 with 150/160 travel and Enduro type geometry, ideal would be a 30.9 seapost but 31.6 will work and we'd shim it.

It's main job will be woods, jumps, drops, enduro racing, he's happy with 15' gap jumps and doing the 8' vertical hero drop at Swinley Summit, trips to Morzine, FoD, BPW etc. Flat out XC speed doesn't much matter, but if it could weigh something reasonable when 1X etc it would be nice.

We'll likely do frame only and swap all the bits over from his current frame rather than a whole bike purchase, so will have 150 revelations, 1x11GX, Vyron dropper, Guide RS brakes, etc.

Anyway... feel free to suggest what you like.... I do have an option on this frame at £730... What say you on the Rallon ?

Following.
Missed out on an (on paper) sweet deal on a canyon strive frameset pre covid.
That would've made a really versatile bike park/Enduro bike.
Would've been sub 30lbs I think.
Doesn't seem to be much frame only about at the moment though

What about a SH Bird 145? Transferable warranty and should be within budget

The very few that are about seem more like £1000

Try the Bird Owners Facebook. The last of the new stock were cleared at £577 so £1k is a laugh SH.

Yeah but that was without shock, headset, etc. So closer to a grand. But I agree with the logic of your point, the reality isn't quite the same

When I looked a few days ago there was still a small green 145 in the sale. £577 no shock. Even with a shock that shouldn’t be too expensive. Maybe the small Bird isn’t bigger enough than the small Specialized though and a medium is more appropriate. The 145 has a longer reach per size than the 1.5 you were looking at.

Just for reference I sold my 145 in ML with Deluxe Rt3 and Megneg + maxle stealth / headset etc for about £600 ish in Feb. £1000 secondhand is ludicrous. My Aether with Deluxe RT was only just over £1200 brand new.

Might be worth looking for something like a Nukeproof Mega as another option as loads of those must have been sold over the years.

Well if we then factor in £250 shock, £30 headset, £30 bottom bracket and £30 axle, yeah we're at £900 but of course it is then a new frame instead of a used.

Seems to be all out of stock anyway

Bird axle is £20 I think - as is the headset. Plus they’ll fit the headset cups for you and save you a job. Brand spanking new then with a decent warranty.

Join the group, put a post up and see what you get offered. Plenty of shocks on the page change hands for ~£100 and lots of 145 owners switching to the AM9 or other brands

Is the Rallon a 29er or 650b? To pay that sort of money secondhand it would have to be pristine / not used much and / or a really expensive frame to start with.

650b which is what he wants.

It's great condition, not unmarked but good for sure

Been thinking about you all week. My eldest daughter has been for tea and I had forgot she has a medium 650b S Works Enduro in her garage not been used that I could swap over with an equivalent 29er for her.
I would split and sell as a frame and forks, or as everything minus the wheels.
I don't have any wheels to swap out

Let me know if he's interested

I've got one of those model of rallon (along with a 2018 capra and an orbea wild fs) it's a great bike, really playful compared to the capra. Not as long in reach as the current crop of enduro bikes, but still a great bike.

There's nothing really to look out for on that frame except the same stuff you need to check on any frame, namely the various bearings.

But that price does seem a bit strong even with the fox float x2 shock.

Interesting. I'm honestly struggling on eBay and pink bike to find anything I'd consider better value, maybe it's the Covid tax but it seems decent in the current market

That's a good thing I think as he's not quite a medium yet.

Seeing him on his Small I may actually be very much jumping the gun. But not by that much, 6-7 months he'll be golden I think in the worst case scenario

This
435mm reach so most likely bigger than the Specialized as they're all pretty short aren't they.
I was close to offering but I'm not in the UK and looking for non boost

Maybe your right, maybe its a fair price in the current market. That shock is brill and will go well with the frame. The frame has quite a linear leverage rate so a shock that can be tuned with volume spacers will work well, although if your boy is small/light he probably won't need many/any spacers.

The rallon is a great bike to ride, compared to the capra it's very playful, climbs well enough, descends well, usual clichés. But it's a decent bike.

I had forgot she has a medium 650b S Works Enduro in her garage

Trying to imagine a life where the existence of a S Works can be overlooked 😜
