I have an old steel tourer which I want to strip and rebuild as a singlespeed commuter. A bike mechanic friend has offered to do it all for me, including sending it away for blasting/respraying, but I like the idea of doing the whole thing myself, including stripping the frame of paint and patches of rust and then respraying.

Anyone else done this? I've heard Nitromors is one way to go but some say it's too weak to be effective.
I'm not fussed with the finished result being pristine, so any methods however messy are welcome 🙂

Nitrimors depends on the paint thats on it already.
If it is that old then its probably just stove enamel, so should come off ok. Its messy, & takes patience.
Apply - wait - scrape - apply - wait etc.
Youe need somewhere well ventilated to do it. I took to doing it outside on a bin liner. The stuff is really nasty.

As for painting, I used Plastikote. It goes on nice & thick. you'll need a couple of coats of primer though.

Alternatively, just get it stripped & powder coated in some dull colour, then spray it at home yourself in a posh colour. Trouble with a lot of Industrial powder coaters is the limted colour choice. I've had a few frames painted matt black then over painted at home.

Heres an old one...

thank you - that's really helpful. Think I might go the Nitromors route - happy if it takes a while.
