I'll spare you the details but I managed to compress the dropouts on a steel frame 😡

I've managed to eek them back out to the correct spacing but to my eye the wheel is sitting closer to one stay than the other by a MM or two. 😡 😥

Well it's not my eye, it is out but it is only a MM or two.

Not spoken to my LBS yet but if I re dish my wheel by the difference will baby kittens and Robbins die in a firestorm of all that is ham fistedness?

I'd just leave it but knowing its there will eat me 8)

Quick and dirty frame alignment: run some thread from a rear drop out, round the head tube, and back to the other drop out. Then measure the distance between the thread and seat tube on each side. Obviously you need to make sure that the thread runs from the same point on each drop out.

Stout, non-stretchy cord is better than thread IME for checking frame alignment - steel frames are 'malleable' but you have to over-compensate to get a given amount of movement. Best done by an experienced hand.
