[Closed] Fox X2 rear shock, pressure loss when releasing lock out

Hi,

I've got an Intense Sniper with a 'Fox Performance Float X2, 8.5x2.5" (165mm), 2-position (open/firm)' rear shock.

Other than setting sag and fiddling a bit with rebound damping, I haven't paid it too much attention since I've had the bike (about 6 months, not ridden much over winter) - it's just worked.

However, last night I locked it out for the 3 mile ride to the trails, unlocked as I got there and...pffffft. Lost virtually all air pressure. Rode home on the almost bottomed out shock as there was still a tiny bit of pressure in there. Pumped it up when I got back, and it seems to have held pressure fine overnight, and feels OK.

Is this a known thing? Unsure how to proceed at the moment as I can't reproduce it.

cheers,

Not sure how flicking the climb switch could release air pressure as the climb switch affects compression damping which is a totally separate area of the shock compared to the air spring.

Is it possible that you don't have the dust cap on the vair valve, and maybe you knocked the schrader valve with you hand and release all the air at the same time as you reached for the climb switch?

Schrader cap fully in place. Spent a while fiddling to see if I could have caught anything else while flicking the switch but nothing obvious.

Presumably there's some kind of safety valve for the 'fully locked' out state? Could I have inadvertently activated that? Even so I would expect it just to open the damper and have nothing to do with the air side, although once the air had gone the shock did sink even in the fully locked out mode.

The X2 doesnt have a full lockout (ie one that causes the shock to become rigid) , the climb switch just increases the compression damping, so its harder to compress, but the shock will still move when you bounce on it.

Are you sure you have a fox X2 (would be an odd choice for a 100mm travel intense sniper)? Not that it matters much, flicking the lever between open and firm shouldnt release any air regardless of shock.

Hm, yes, good point. I just cut and pasted the shock name from the web page blurb, however the manual says:

FOX Float DPS 165x40, trunnion mount, 20mm x 8mm reducers.

And yes, it looks far more like this one. https://www.ridefox.com/family.php?m=bike&family=float . Far too late to change the thread subject.

It's the Factory version with a 3 position lever. What I call 'locked out' - it really hardly moves - they call firm.

Apparently plumbing the shock tune number into the Fox tool gives:

2018, FLOAT DPS, F-S, K, 3pos-Adj, Trunnion Evol SV, Intense, Sniper XC, 165, 40, DCM, DRM, CMF, YS 706/YS 953-1 Logo

I'm clearly going to have to get much more into this than I want, although I had a good go on it last night with no issues. Time to poke through this https://www.ridefox.com/fox17/help.php?m=bike&id=549

On the plus side I've discovered the open mode adjust having read the manual.

If its working fine now, I'd just ride it until it breaks again and see if you can narrow down the circumstances when it does it, then send it in for a service/repair.

I'd check the valve core, you can get a cheap tool just to tighten it, if loose that might explain a sudden pressur eloss
