I have an Orange Five with an X2 Shock. There is some slack / knock when I lift the weight off bike. I have replaced the pivot bearings, so all good there.
Do I need to buy a £20 5 part hardware kit or is there just a wear part that can be replaced ?

Get some one to check the shock area / bike as it’s lifted to see what is actually causing the knocking. If it’s the shock it should be easy to see / feel with 2 people.

Find the bit that’s moving then replace.

You can replace the eyelet bush(s) without replacing the hardware as long as the pin is in good condition. If the pin is also worn it will need replaced

Thanks both.

This has had me scratching my head since, but I think I now understand how the hardware works. I think that the hardware is clamped tight by the through bolt, so the hollow metal (tube) pin that goes through the eyelet does not rotate ?

The rotation happens on the nylon bush against the fixed hollow pin ?

Having torqued the bolt tight to 12nm, there is no play, this is right ?

@binman I had this on my Santa Cruz. The cream bush is a wear part and cheaply replaced. Hopefully you’ve caught it before any damage to the metal parts.

You need two per end, so four per shock. Rear ones tend to wear more due to extra rotation at that end, but I replace both ends at a time. So cheap I ordered 12 at one time to make postage worthwhile.
If that doesn’t help, it’s unfortunately two new sets of full mounts.

Picture stolen from TF Tuned. The axle or pin is clamped in the frame and is fixed once the shock bolt is tight. The shock eyelet bush or bushings are fixed in the shock, the pin rotates in the bush. With the shock removed from the frame it will be tight (cant turn with your fingers), it does not rotate smoothly like a bearing but has a reasonable amount of friction. The spacers keep the shock centered. The pin is very slightly longer than the spacers+shock+any seals.

The current fox bushes are top hat style as linked by clubby, straight ones like the TF picture are also common.

That fits in with my recent realisation. I was thrown by the fact that there you couldn't twist the pin in the bushing by hand !

£30 wasted on shock hardware, but you live an learn !

Thanks, it gets rid of that nagging doubt.

Sounds like you've solved it now, but I just wanted to say I'd be 90% sure you just need a new eyelet bushing.

Some bikes have a real appetite for them. I find the ones on my Oranges last very well, but I had a NP Mega which would kill the rear one in a matter of months.

If it’s just the bushings I’d suggest getting some from Offset shock bushings They’re really good quality and only £14.99. Available in offset or standard.
