I have just noticed that the there is no resistance on the first 3mm - 5mm ish of travel on my Fox 34 120mm fork.

Is this normal or should there be resistance for the full length?

Can’t say I have noticed before picking up the front end of the bike tonight - although it isn’t something I have been looking for neither!

It's not normal, and i'd get it inspected asap. It's probably nothing major, but riding it with something that may be loose inside could cause a lot of damage.

I've had this on my 36...

I think it's a slight imbalance I the positive and negative chambers.
Try this.
If your ideal pressure is 60psi..
Pump the fork to about 80.
Cycle the fork (I.e bounce it up and down).
Let out about 10psi
Cycle the fork.
Let out a few psi
Cycle
Drop a few psi each time, then cycle, till you get to 60 psi.

That should make it not 'drop' into the first few mm of travel under its own weight!
