After loads of bad press   would anyone risk a new Float x2  or is it not worth the hassle ?   Im so on the fence  as the Float x is easy enough to work on with a can service and the X2 isnt .. plus they have a reliability problem ..  Advise me please peeps :}

Fox are replacing those up to 23 model year with new ones foc or for service cost on older ones. You need a purchase invoice (shock or bike etc), just had mine done on a privateer ebike.

It's understandable you're hesitant, given the Float X2's reputation. While the X2 offers a great performance advantage, it's fair to say that the complexity of the design and some early reliability issues have created a bit of a "fear factor."

I'd be all over a rs vivid if I was looking for a high end air shock without the stratospheric cost of the ext aria

I think I’d try a Rockshox Vivid Ultimate instead tbh. I’ve got a Vivid coil and it’s amazing / I’ve got a Fox X2 Factory and it’s ok - but hard to say it’s massively better than the Float X performance elite I had before. My X2 had issues - it’s been rebuilt by Silverfish with all the 2024 revisions and so far so good. Although since I got the Vivid the X2 hasn’t really got a look in - the coil is so much better in every way apart from weight.

Apparently there is a completely new X2 launching at some point so definitely deals to be had currently! I run the latest version X2 on all my bikes and haven't had any issues

Does that 2024 replacement thing go for any year of shock or is it just certain years? I've got one from 2018 sat in the spares bin.

I don't think they are going that far back, worth an email though, if they'll cover 159 I think will get you a new shock. Email Fox service uk not Silverish/MOJO of old.

I got a 2022 or 23 model X2 from them for £350 last year, and I keep telling myself I need to ride that bike more to give it a chance to bork itself (and get updated).

I'll have to take that bike out this week and hit some drops actually.

My lad got a Vivid Ultimate and says it's night and day better than the Super Deluxe Ultimate DH. That's even without having it setup, just bounced on it and got it roughly close, he says it's incredibly plush.

My 2022 Orbea Rise has a Float X Performance shock

I've got one of these as well.

Good shock but I've had to set the rebound pretty fast to get the best out of it, the X2 has a bit more cush to it and is more adjustable, but that can make it easier to get wrong.

What do I need to look out for on the X2's? I've just built my lad a Transition Sentinel and the frame I bought was a 2022 model with a Float X2. Seems to be ok at the moment but whats going to happen to it?....

@ads678 AI tell us.. A squishing or squelching noise from a Fox Float X2 shock, especially after sitting, is often caused by air mixing with the oil, a phenomenon called cavitation, which can affect performance.

A friend reckon there pretty sorted now, I hope so, I bought a bargain one a few months a ago and need to fit it.

I've got an X2 and having read loads about failures I am half thinking I need a spare or I'll ruin a riding trip... It's currently working fine and I really like it

We are running them on three Turbo Levos and two Enduros. have them regularly serviced and not had one fail yet.

Bought just in case spare shocks after reading all the horror stories on here but not had to use them yet

The replacement seems to be for 2021 and later versions.

My 2019 has had no issues so far.

Cool, I'll keep an eye on it and an eye out for a bargain rear shock to keep as a spare so as not to ruin a holiday....

Its not making squishy noise at the moment 🤞

I had one of the original X2s which seemed to need expensive repairs on every service (new air can, new shaft etc) but performance was really good.  A '21 came with my Nukeproof mega and worked for about >20 days riding before it died (and of course did so just before a holiday).  As it was over x months old (despite the minimal use) had to pay for a service to get the warranty parts replacement but had bought a coil in hurry to take on holiday and so sold on the repaired shock.

At the risk of being pedantic, oil mixing with air is emulsification. Oil not being able to fill the void behind the piston and creating a low pressure area that changes the oil characteristics is cavitation

My 2016 X2 tends to start making squishy noises roughly every 2 years. It doesn't get a lot of use, and when I mentioned this last time I got it serviced, they suggested if it wasn't being used much then I might as well depressurise it a fair bit between uses. No point getting the seals to hold in 240psi all the time if it's not being used.

So I didn't even need to hit a drop.

Took that bike out last night and noticed right away that the climb switch had ceased to function, and the shock may also be feeling a touch wallowy but it's hard to tell.

Anyway, it's booked in for a warranty inspection now and their email suggests updated parts will be fitted.

I'll report back.

@chakaping - did you check the pressure?

My 2019 has had no issues so far.

I've a 2020 version tuned for a Ripmo AF - it works well at pressure, but only holds pressure (250psi) for a day before dropping back to 200psi even directly after a service. My suspension mechanic says that's not unusual with the X2. I'd rather top it up every ride than go without it for a week or more.

No, that's a good shout.

But it was a spare/alternative shock to the coil one anyway, so I am very happy to send it away if they're being updated as a policy anyway. I'd rather it didn't have whatever parts made the 2022/3 shocks vulnerable to failure.

I was told the X2 was a particular issue on asymmetrical frame mounting shocks where there's a degree of lateral loading (I'm probably not explaining that correctly but hopefully you get the idea).

the climb switch had ceased to function,

How effective is the lock out on this shock?  I've got one too but havent used it much.  But I noticed out the box that the lock out was pretty soft compared with the Super Delux that it replaced.

Anyone got a link to the upgrade / service offer?

I'm a big fan of lockout/climb switch/propedal/whatever levers.

This X2 and my older (2018ish) one were both sort of middle-to-firm, making a noticeable and useful change.

A few comparisons:

  • Float X - similar to X2
  • Super Deluxe (older version) - same ballpark
  • Fox DPS - Bit firmer
  • Formula Mod coil - Very firm
  • Various Cane Creeks - Softer but more supple for climbing (because they also adjust rebound IIRC)
  • Ohlins TTX coil - Barely noticeable (and confirmed by J Tech that they are useless)
  • EXT Storia - Middle-ish

I'd agree. I use it every ride and find it useful. Bit it's not so firm it ruins a descent if I forget to move it back.

I emailed them and they told me to raise a warranty request.

I'd suggest emailing Silverfish (if in UK) and asking.
