This shock has 9 settings. C, T and D (which are easy to adjust as you ride) multiplied by soft, medium and firm (which requires a dismount to adjust).

Is it possible to get this shock modified so that Climb is always on firm, trail is always on medium and Descend is always on soft? I appreciate I'd lose 6 of the possible 9 permutations but that's a sacrifice I'd gladly make in order to make "on the fly" adjustments to the extremes of the shock's behaviour, and one slap bang in the middle.

AFAIK the black adjuster (1,2,3) only works on the trail setting anyway.

So leave it in 2 if that's what you want & the shock does as you want it to.

Edited to add:

For controls, the Float X CTD features slightly-tucked-away rebound, compression, and air spring pressure. On the compression side, the CTD (Climb, Trail, Descend) controls not only change the compression circuit platforms, but the smaller black dial allows further fine tuning of the trail setting only.

As Hob Nob said the 1,2,3 setting only has an effect on the trail setting. I've been using this shock for a couple of months now - personally I find the numbers more useful than the CTD - climb is good for smooth climbs but it virtually locks out the rear on my bike - the Descent setting is great on really big stuff or when you've got a lot of Gravity to play with - but it's too soft on my bike for singletrack it kills my pump and makes pedalling almost pointless.

I've been climbing in C, and riding most everything else in T2.

Well feeling quite foolish. That's the mother of all placebos. I have been experimenting with descend/soft and I could have sworn I felt glued to the trail compared to descend/medium, which very skippy. Likewise the ups in climb/firm felt so taught and efficient compared to the soggy climb/medium. What a muppet!
