I have a Fox 36 that I'm looking to upgrade the damper on.
It's a 2018 36 RC2 29er set at 150mm with a Smashpot coil conversion on it.
I've never really been happy with this fork and know that other people have also not been happy with the RC2 damper.
From new the fork has always felt a bit harsh.
Fitting the Smashpot improved it a fair amount but I'm still not happy with it.
It feels a bit spikey in square edge stuff and I can never get full travel out of it.
I have always run both high and low speed compression fully open. (maybe winding on a bit of slow speed comp if I've got a big draggy climb to do)
I did a lower service on it a few days ago and while rebuilding it noticed that even without the coil unit fitted it was quite hard to push it all the way down to full travel. Which to me seems not right.
So the upshot is i want to do one of two things to it.
1.Fit a Grip2 damper to it
2.Get an Andreani piston and custom valve on the RC2 damper.
So anyone tried either of those options that's had the RC2 damper?
Any thought or advice on either of these?
I tried a pair of Grip 2 36s last year and thought they were very nice. But not tried the other options you’ve listed.
I had a 2016 rc2 which I always had similar feelings about, put it down to me being a scrawny piece.
A full service and Push revalve by TF was a revelation. So much more supple, easier on my wrists, and less tiring on the descents. Worked really well.
I have a slightly older RC2, with the andreani and smashpot. It basically keeps all the good stuff about the RC2 but without the spiking and with good (but not spectacular) compliance. I really like it, though I've still got the hsc rolled all the way off and tbh I wish it was just that little bit more responsive. Being as light as I am probably gives it a hard time to be fair but it's still not as good as, say, an old Lyric DH or an R2C2 boxxer.
You'd be welcome to try it, though, bear in mind I weigh 10 stone
Nice offer Northy but as you say with you being 10 stone not much point.
Out of interest who fitted your Andreani piston?
While you had it apart, did you check to see how much resistance came from the bushes? Getting them resized might help things.
If it's not that, I used to run an Avalanche damper in a 36 and it was amazing. Shame it was a 26" version.
Onza no I didn't but will if I end up buying the Grip2 and fitting it myself.
Also after seeing something yesterday I'll be trying it with the wheel bolted in.

Jtech- I wanted to get the bushings checked too so it made sense just to send it in and get it fitted.
Ta.
I've also been speaking to Jtech about this.
Booked with Jtech for the Andriani piston/revalve and bushing check.
See how this works out.
