I have some fox 36 talas, and just sent them for a service.
I have had a report they are damaged on the stantions below the lower leg by on of the seals. It will cost about £250 to repair which I am not keen about. Wondering if anyone else knows of this problem and what may happen if I don't fix it and keep riding?

Please Help.

Thanks

they'll just gradually get worse as the stanchions wear and get rattly and eventually start leaking oil past the seals.

Foxes are fairly well known for this. Most people either bite the bullet or ride them into the groudn depending on the age/value of the forks.

If the damage is a scratch? then it may let water/dirt in.

The thing is. If you want the forks as good as new. You will have to pay.

Or you could (if it is a scratch) fill it with nail varnish and finely rub it smooth. And service the forks yourself every month or so if water/dirt is getting in.

These forks are alot easier than you would imagine to service yourself.

Yeah its a sctrach, I have heard of the nail varnish method. They are 06 so quite old, but if I leave them, will cost a lot more to replace.
Hmm. Anyone got a set on upper stantions they wish to sell me?

Your forks must be the other set at TF Tuned as I have the same problem. the guy at TF Tuned was saying he had spoken to another person with same issue.

Stantions are scratched inside so not sure how well the nail varnish solution would work.

If they're scratched inside I would assume it's on the spring/Talas leg which would lead to air seals not sealing and allowing air between chambers.

I'm also guessing they're 150 travel brown Talas ones, if they were 160 you could convert to a coil spring.

Mine did the same plus, if they are the ones with the delightful Brown lowers, the pinch bolts had cracked. Replaced the stanchions and lowers plus service all for less than a new set.

The comment about self service is worth it to keep on top of the wear. And its easy too.

Yeah they are, the guy phoned me this morning. Yours with exactly the same problem? I am wondering how bad it is, whether they just want more money for a small problem or if it is a major issue. What do you think you will do?

Basic service for cleaning foam ring and seal is relativly easy, the problem is that you really need the correct shaft clamps to not damage the damper unit when you strip it to rplace the oil and other parts.

yeah i'm sure they just want more money for a small issue, lots of companies of that size and popularity are well known for ripping people off.......not. Having recently contacted mojo i got some really good advice for free, not trying to get me to buy anything. Its a common problem that the stanchions wear on forks that haven't been given the required tlc, fox stanchions are worse than others for this which is why they recommend more regular service intervals, not a costly one but one for which they provide a how to video online for. Either get the work done or run them into the ground, your call. edit: not sure if your forks are with mojo or tf but both are equally good to deal with ime.

What they're giving you is the price to actually fix it, but if you didn't know there was a problem before, ask if they can service and rebuild it without repairing the fault. The worst that can happen is probably that it soon fails because of the wear, and they you replace the fork uppers then instead and just have to pay again for the labour and seals. So that's a gamble possibly but maybe one worth taking.

Yes quite a few people have had Fox forks of about this age wear, but quite a few people also just carry on regardless and the forks still do the job they want them to do. So ask the question, see what they say. My own Revelations have a decent sized ding in one fork upper, I should really replace the uppers but as it's not yet created a problem I'm leaving it. it'll be wearing the seals etc and might cause problems some day soon but in the meantime it works and the seals will need replaced if I replace the uppers anyway.

How on earth do they get scratched inside?

Is this avoidable through DIY?

Instead of spending £250 on new stanchions, your best bet is to sell them cheap as they are whilst there's still some life in them and get some nice used Rockshox Lyriks for £300-£350

You'll get £100 or so for the Foxes and end up with a newer, more reliable fork in the process.

the lowers on 36's are prone to 'dry out' theres only a small quantity of oil in the bottom of the forks; it's worth sticking to the service intervals for the seals and foam rings + refiling the lower oil levels.

Fox and Enduro seals have some good guidance on these tasks.

I've had exactly the same experience and you've got 2 realistic choices either as PP say's buy some rockshox or ride them to death....which I'm doing.... although they ride far beter now that I've converted them to DIY floats 😉

Bit of a hijack but my seals started leaking today on my Van 36s. How much bushing slop do people think is acceptable and how much can a pro service take out? I've got the seals and can swap them out myself but was wondering if it's worth getting the bushes looked at.
