You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Looking to change a week's hiking holiday into a biking or mixed one, due to the ongoing crap weather.
What do you suggest in this area? MTB. Tech and scenic adventures are good, lots of pushing is bad, carrying is a no. Don't mind an hour's drive to get somewhere. Needs to be a circuit or out and back.
- Corrieyairack Pass out and back
- Drumnadrochit
- Nevis Range - lower trails and gondola trails
Thanks in advance!
Corrieyairack Pass out and back
Scratch that, 40km each way. I read it's best done in the westerly direction. Any service buses or shuttles that take bikes? All I can find is Citylink doing a huge loop via Inverness in the afternoon.
Corrieyairack Pass out and back
Lots of pushing is bad,
I did the pass on the badger divide from fort Augustus. It was with bike packing gear which made it harder but I still don't think I'd do it again without gear, the headwind nearly killed me! 🤣 And the descent wasn't worth it.
I much preferred Inverness to fort Augustus which was about 40 miles. Nice techy riding, some good descents and amazing views.
If your fit you could cycle over the pass to corrour station in a day and I think the the train goes back to Inverness where you can get picked up from. Just don't miss the last train.
Corrour is on the Fort William line. It would be via Glasgow to get back to Inverness.
Laggan Wolftrax is allegedly 1h 5m away. Could easily spend a day sessioning that. Preferred it to the lower Nevis Range trails.
There's a good loop from Laggan >Invergarry > around the back of Ben Tee > Cam Bhealach (~30km). There is definitely a bit of pushing involved at some point but very little and the descent is quite good. Takes in some good historic trails and very wild feeling.
Also a loop from Fort Augustus itself to Invermoriston, up Glen Moriston and back over the old miltary road to Fort Augustus (~40km). More scenic than gnarly.
Would rate either of the above higher than riding up and over and back on the Corrieyairick Pass
And the descent wasn’t worth it.
Had a look, I see what you mean. I think I'd be happy with just the scenery though.

No chance I'm afraid, 40km and 1000m is about my usual day.
40Km? If you can get your bike booked on the Tulloch to Rannoch train it's around 40km of mainly landrover track via Loch Ossian back to the car. Nothy techy but 40km of no roads and remoteness.

Thanks. I was all set to do this one day but it was too windy to be up at the 630m bealach.
Plotted it as 33km, 950m climbing/descent.
Once went Invergarry - Achnacarry via Fedden on a bikepacking trip. Brutal! Little trace of a path for much of the way and fence bother. Great feeling of being out there. Getting over the Cam Bhealach does have a path though.
Fort A to Inverness and back using the trails on the south side of the Loch and then come back on the Great Glen Way on the north side?
Corrieyairack Pass is totally rideable, 2500ft climb and then freewheel back.
Or how about train to Newtonmore or Kingussie Railway stations then ride via the Corrieyairack Pass back to Fort A?
There's a loop/balloon ride up past loch ma stac from the a887 glen moriston road to tomich then back over the wade road. You can then extend along the military rd back to fort Augustas. I've done it several times from fa, along great glen way, up glen moriston direction. It's remote, a wee bit of pushing but not much, it's not hike a bike.
A bit of everything. Cafe usually open on the a887 dundreggan
